AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Henley 2 on Sat 19 May 2012 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 7 wickets

Match report Amersham 1st XI finally took the field this season on May 16th, but recorded a comfortable win despite their lack of match practice. The victory was based on an effective bowling performance in which there was no single outstanding performance, but sufficient all round pressure to dismiss visitors Henley for 131. A four pronged seam attack of new comer Charley Crasbourn (3-16), returnee Alex Lines (3-35), and former colts Stuart Rogers (1-18) & Andy Viney (1-0) meant there was no escape from swing and seam in green conditions. Rogers struck early to remove Horne, well caught by Andy Viney at second slip. Two wickets in an over from Crasbourn were quickly followed by strikes from Viney and Lines to reduce Henley to 42-5. At this point all 5 wickets had fell to catches in the slips and, unusually, 12 of the 13 wickets to fall on the day were to catches as batsmen, perhaps, played fractionally early on a slow wicket.

Darren (48) and Andy (29) White, however, have seen countless situations like this and sensibly rebuilt the Henley innings with a partnership of 50. They pounced on anything short and saw Henley into more comfortable territory. Slow turn from the spin of David Atkinson (2-37) induced a miscue to cover from Darren White just short of his 50, and Andy followed in the next over, caught behind off Alex Lines. Apart from a few lusty blows from James Yandel the Henley tail folded quickly.

The Amersham run chase began slowly as Rob Viney (44) and Joe Shuttle (40) played themselves in. once into their stride, however, they both scored reasonably quickly, rotating the strike with singles and both hitting some punishing boundaries. Both fell, as did Abhay Mayer, to catches off the slow left arm spin of Yandel in a flurry of wickets with the score in the 90s, but Luke Jackson (25*) was in no mood to prolong the game as a series of characteristic cover drives saw Amersham to their target.

This was a pleasing start to the league season, and Amersham travel to Kew Green next Saturday in good heart.
