Kew v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 26 May 2012 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Amersham made the journey to Kew Green on Saturday and came away with a win after chasing a daunting total of 272. A very resilient performance from the Shardeloes side was led by a superb unbeaten 128 from Chris Fleming, who steered the run chase from the very beginning to its successful conclusion. His innings was paced to perfection as victory was claimed with 11 balls to spare. He took full advantage of the hard, fast outfield and some defensive field settings to keep the scoreboard ticking in a partnership of 48 with Hugh Jackson (21). However, the main feature of the Amersham run chase was a partnership of 132 between Fleming and Andy Viney (55) which brought the victory target within sight. Positivity was the hallmark of this partnership, as both batsmen punished anything loose and ran aggressively between the wickets. This put the Kew fielders under pressure, and shifted the momentum towards Amersham. This was brutally finished off by Charley Crasbourn (26*) who ran between the wickets even more aggressively than Viney had, and complemented this with several lusty blows to the boundary, including the only 6 of the game. All this followed a rather wobbly start from Amersham, which saw the run chase falter at 53-4 before Fleming and Jackson began to set the tone.
The excellence of the run chase was the highlight of the day, and the Kew innings was also dominated by the bat. An opening partnership of 103 between Kidron Thomas (40) and Bruce Friderichs (114) was scored at double quick pace and, when the score was 51 off 6 overs a much larger score than the eventual 272 seemed likely. However, Alex Lines (2-34), Andy Viney (2-31) and, particularly Abhay Mayer (4-51), bowled well, maintaining a high level of control over line and length to gradually reduce the scoring rate and chip away with a few wickets. The reward for this persistence was the eventual victory as Fleming orchestrated the runchase that was made possible by the resilience of the bowling attack.
Next week Amersham entertain Finchampstead at Shardeloes.
