AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Finchampstead on Sat 02 Jun 2012 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 35 runs
Match report
Amersham recorded a third consecutive victory in division 1 of the Morrant Thames Valley League last Saturday, with a 35 run win over Finchampstead at Shardeloes. An excellent game of cricket ebbed and flowed between the two very evenly matched sides all afternoon before the pressure applied by Amersham's bowling and fielding caused the visitors' tail to fold, with 7 wickets falling for the addition of only 33 runs.
Both sides came into the game full of confidence. Amersham had won their last two games, while Finchampstead had scored more than 300 runs in each of their last two fixtures. When they won the toss it was no surprise that they chose to field first, to give their powerful batting line up the chance to record a victory.
An opening partnership of 63 between Rob Viney (50) and Joe Shuttle (17) was dominated by Viney, who took advantage of tricky fielding and bowling conditions as the moisture left by the morning's rain dried off. Once Viney had fallen Finchampstead found their way back into the game strongly as tidy bowling from Sam Taylor (3-57) and Lance Stewart (2-42) limited scoring opportunities and claimed 4 more wickets, leaving Amersham in a perilous position at 84-5. However, this Amersham side has a long & strong batting order. Andy Viney (34) and Abhay Mayer (59), batting at 6 and 7 respectively, both have considerable experience much higher in the batting order and they fashioned a partnership of 83 with a mixture of watchful defence, aggressive running and, especially from Mayer, unorthodox boundary hitting. Although they were both dismissed shortly before the end of the innings they provided the platform for a final flourish from Charley Crasbourn (17) and Stuart Rogers (9 off three balls) which allowed Amersham to finish on 206-7, claiming maximum batting points as Rogers planted Russell Lane's medium pace back over his head for 6 in the final over.
Given the strength of the Finchampstead batting, the Amersham players knew that voctory would require a fine effort, and this was what they delivered. Tight opening spells from Crasbourn (4-38) and Rogers (1-28) first acted to increase the required run rate, and then accounted for the dangerous Lane, caught at mid off by Chris Fleming and in form Jones, taken one handed and acrobatically in the covers by Andy Viney, reducing Finchampstead to 18-2. Gary Loveday (30) and Dan Lincoln (61) batted sensibly, taking few risks and moving the score on in a partnership of 58 before Loveday mistimed Atkinson (1-23) to Rogers at mid on as they began to accelerate. Lincoln batted increasingly aggressively, finding similar support from Chris Ellison (40) before he fell with the score on 138, stumped by Rob Viney off Abhay Mayer (1-25).
This interlude from the two spinners ended as Crasbourn and Alex Lines (2-31) returned to increase the pressure. House and Bell fell cheaply to Crasbourn. Crasbourn also enacted what might have been the pivotal moment in the match, swooping athletically in his follow through to gather the ball and run Ellison out as he attempted a quick single. This left 7 overs for Amersham to claim the remaining 3 wickets, which they did thanks to testing seam bowling from Lines and Crasbourn, who deservedly claimed the final wicket by bowling Taylor with 17 balls to spare.
This was a very good all round performance from Amersham, illustrating strength throughout the team. The depth of the batting order, the quality of the fielding and the variety of teh bowling attack all had a part to play in this excellent win. The side now lies second in the league and travels to Basingstoke in good heart next week.
