Basingstoke & North Hants v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 09 Jun 2012 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 77 runs
Match report
Amersham made the long journey to Basingstoke on a blustery afternoon and came away with a satisfying 77 run victory. Having lost the toss on a wet wicket initial opes were not high, but a first rate opening partnership between the watchful ROb Viney (27) and the aggressive Joe Shuttle (41) was only broken when Shuttle was judged LBW to the effective Ryan Connor (4-91). Viney and Chris Cann followed almost immediately before Chris Own (10) supported Luke Jackson (30) in a rebuilding exercise. This was ended when they, and Andy Viney, fell in a flurry as Basingstoke fought back again. For a third time, though, Amersham came back strongly in possibly the defining partnership of the game. Abhay Mayer (50*) recorded consecutive half centuries, and Charley Crasbounr illustrated his all round quality with 25, characterised by whippet like pace between the wickets. Their partnership of 71 for the 7th wicket demonstrated a key feature of this Amersham side-its resilience and strength in depth.
After tea the swing bowling of Stuart Rogers took centre stage. In a highly effective opening spell he conceded very few runs and picked up 3 wickets as Basingstoke's top order were dismissed cheaply. With the score on 43-5 Amersham were clearly in charge of the game, but diligent performances from Jack Parsons, Martyn James and Simon Bucksey moved Basingstoke's score towards 3 figures. Abhay Mayer's offspin induced a false sweep from Parsons, though, and a fine direct hit run out from Crasbourn accounted for Bucksey. Fittingly, Rogers returned to claim the final wicket as Amersham recorded their 4th consecutive league victory. This closed the gap at the top of the table to 2 points and the visit of Wokingham on Saturday is eagerly awaited.
