Henley 2 v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 18 May 2013 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 150 runs
Match report
Amersham travelled to Henley seeking their first league win of the year after a winning draw the previous week. Captain Sid Jackson won the toss and set the trend for the year by batting first on a dry but slow wicket. Rob Viney (69) and Bruce Friedrichs (40) started confidently but found the wicket tough to score on early. A second 50+ opening stand for the year was achieved with ease, however Bruce gave it all away when he looked set for his second successive "start" this year, more focus shall be required this week. The more attractive Chris Cann (94) joined Rob and the pair proceeded to go after the bowling. Rob, riled up by some Cannesque chat, was unusually aggressive and particularly effective lofting straight. Cann very quickly went on the attack, punishing the wide variety of bowling served up to him (in one instance hitting 4 consecutive maximums) before getting tired and holing out to long off for an extremely well made 94. With some effective late hitting from Paul Langley (29) Amersham were able to declare after 51 overs at 256/5.
The captain was quick to remind the team that the job was only halfway done at tea, and to set our focus on cricketing well. An early wicket for Lines (1-lots) was followed by some inconsistent bowling which allowed Henley to form a small but dangerous partnership. However the introduction of a young Martin Keown (5-8) immediately produced the rewards and with S Rogers (3-27) removing the danger man Barber we were quickly into the tail and on our way towards a 25 point party. Keown bowled with good flight and guile, his clever bowling will be a significant asset looking forwards this year. With L Jackson taking the final wicket, Amersham had collected the maximum amount of points and solidified 3rd place in the league. Next week Amersham host 2nd placed Kew which promises to be a stern early season test for the team.
