AMERSHAM held their nerve to win the top of the table decider on the last day of the season – in a finish that no script-writer could have devised.

The battle was so intense that both sides finished the season on the same number of points, with the determining factor being the six wins Amersham achieved batting first throughout the season compared to the four managed by Finch.

Last week’s defeat to Chesham made Amersham’s task all the more difficult on Saturday, and victory alone would not have been enough to make up a 13 point deficit.

They needed to restrict their opponents to under 175 to get two extra batting points for that total, and even then, they needed to score their runs without losing more than three wickets to avoid giving away another bowling point.

A superb opening partnership of 115 between Rob Viney (54) and Bruce Friderichs (77 not out) gave them hope, but the loss of three quick wickets left them needing a further 35.

In the end, Andy Viney did his bit in a partnership of 35, scoring a four to wrap up the title. But had he got out to that ball, the title would have been lost – it was that close.

“It was the most incredible way to win the league,” skipper Luke Jackson said. “It was unbelievably tense until the very last ball. When I lost the toss and they were 92-2, I thought it was not looking good, but somehow we just kept them six runs under the total in their allotted overs.”
