Hillingdon Manor v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 02 Aug 2014 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 3 runs

Match report A day of disappointment which was an unusual feeling for the 2nd XI this season. We started by releasing that we were not due to play at the luxurious ground at RAF Vine Lane due to an inter services tournament, but instead played at Coney Green. The wicket had quite a significant grass covering and when calling correctly at the toss we decided to bowl first.

Ward (5-28) removed both Hillingdon's number 1 and 3 when the score was on 12. The score had reached 31 and Ward stepped up to bowl his fifth over. The first ball to Gary Hales (Alex's Dad) cut back beautifully of the seam to bowl him through the gate and hitting the top of off stump which required the square leg umpire to ask for a new bail. The following ball to the number 5 was aimed at the batsman's pads and he chipped it to Ali at square leg - 2 in. 2. The excitement was building but the field positioning did not change. The third ball was in a great area which the batsman had to play at. A little prod found a thin edge through to wicketkeeper Langley to catch - cue the celebrations for a fantastic Ward hat-trick. Ward's figures were 5-4-4-5 at this point. 36-6 soon became 84-6 with the lower order showing resistance with a few boundaries. The introduction of Douglas (3-29) saw us bowl Hillingdon out for 112. Delighted with our performance at this point as our fielding was impressive on a difficult outfield.

Our batting has been consistently impressive this season but just when we had a low total to chase we kept losing regular wickets and couldn't build partnerships. After finding ourselves 14-2, Fleming (28) and Stephenson (21) got our score to 51-2 and almost halfway to the target. Stephenson was caught on the point boundary but Ali (25) took over where he left of with regular boundaries. 82-5 and then 91-6 meant we were still in control and only needed 20 runs for victory. The dismissal of Fleming was a big blow and we were 105-9 needing eight for victory. Ahmed hit a four through backward square and we all knew from the sidelines that one more boundary blow would seal us a 20 point victory. Sritharan showed very good technique in playing out a maiden over but the following over saw Ahmed edge the ball low down to first slip which resulted in us losing by three runs. We came agonisingly close to keeping our unbeaten run going but it just wasn't to be.

Please let this be a wake up call to all and to realise that we cannot afford anymore slip ups. We currently stand 49 points clear at the top of the league. Burnham 3s come to Shardleoes next Saturday in a crucial game for both teams.
