AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 v Burnham 3 on Sat 09 Aug 2014 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 149 runs
Match report
We all knew this would be a crucial match in our quest for promotion to Division 3 especially as we had to recover from our disappointing three run defeat at the hands of Hillingdon Manor the week before.
Strangely the toss was quite dramatic. The coin was tossed and an extremely late call of 'heads' by the Burnham skipper as the coin had basically landed saw Burnham win the toss. However, the Burnham skipper very sportingly offered a re-toss. The second toss saw Burnham call 'heads' and this time it showed a tail and Amersham elected to bat first.
A wonderful start to the inning by 'Woody' Bowcock (60) saw us race to 83-1 of just 14 overs and Bowcock had scored 60 of them. After he was dismissed we found ourselves in a bit of trouble at 133-5 from just 21 overs! The game was moving forward! The Burnham noise level also began to rise as they sensed an Amersham batting collapse. However, Owen (90) and Player (53) had other ideas! There partnership of 101 was just what was required in the circumstances. Both played beautifully and gradually lowered the noise level of the fielders to a point where the spectators could hear the ball come into contact with the boundary rope. Owen was dismissed on the last ball of the innings. His innings warranted a hundred. Burnham must be sick of the sight of Dr. Owen.
With Ward injuring his leg whilst batting we knew that we would have to bowl and field extremely well to take ten Burnham wickets in a maximum of 48 overs. Raza (4-24) opened the bowling with the old ball along with Kilgannon who got dispatched for 19 runs in his first and only over. The new ball was taken and after only 7 balls were bowled with the new ball Ward hobbled up to the crease and bowled a juicy half volley which was dispatched back over his head and through a plastic panel in the sight screen. Broken sight screen and brand new ball lost in the hedge!
At the halfway stage of Burnham's innings the score was 94-3 and the game seemed to be petering out into a draw. A couple of quick wickets after drinks made us sense victory and with regular wickets falling we dismissed Burnham for 146 with 7 overs remaining. A special mention must go to Sritharan (3-43) and Owen (3-31) who both bowled in fantastic areas and fully deserved three wickets each.
Another 25 point win for the 2nd XI. Still in first place in the league and still 49 points clear of second place. More importantly we are now 76 points clear of third place. This now means that a 25 point win at Cookham Dean on Saturday will confirm a finishing position in the top two and therefore promotion to Division 3. This should be incentive enough going into Saturdays fixture.
