Cookham Dean 2 v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 16 Aug 2014 at 12:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 111 runs
Match report
The 2nd XI travelled to Cookham Dean knowing that a win batting first would secure promotion to Division 3.
Amersham won the toss which is now four toss wins in a row and we decided to bat first. The pitch didn't look the best for batting but we were in search of that win to secure promotion and the pitch just looked like it would get progressively more difficult for batting as the day went on which would help our spinners if our batsman could post a defendable total.
Langley (20) and A. Tilbury (25) began cautiously knowing that we did not want to lose any early wickets. A combination of a few misfields from the Cookham fielders and some impressive strokes saw us move onto 79-2 after 21 overs. H. Jackson (23) was controversially given out bowled by Raza who was umpiring at square leg which left us three wickets down and in need of a partnership to reach 200+. Stephenson (62) and A. Ali (24) put on 87 runs together with especially Stephenson showing a full range of scoring strokes. He played the very loopy slow Cookham spinners very well and his innings was vital in us posting a respectable and certainly defendable 229-8.
Tea was pleasant knowing that we needed to take ten Cookham wickets to secure promotion.
As has been the trend in the last few weeks, we began with the old ball. Atkinson (4-39) and Ahmed (5-71) bowled very consistently from the first over to keep the Cookham batsman frustrated. Wickets were taken at regular intervals with some very impressive catches being taken. One that must be mentioned is Raza Ahmed bowling to Cookham's number 3 batsman. The score was 19-1 in the eighth over. As Raza bowled this particular ball he usually drifts left after he has bowled and the batsman hit this full pitched ball back in Razas general direction. The ball can't have got more than a couple of inches of the ground and Raza dived full length to his right to catch the ball in front of the stumps at the non-strikers end. A truly remarkable catch which resulted in Raza throwing the ball into the air in celebration and all his teammates surrounding him not quite believing what they had just witnessed. A wonderful athletic effort and a day to remember for Raza as this was his first five wicket haul for Amersham.
The return of Atkinson made a huge difference and he showed fantastic consistency and control with his bowling. His fourth and final wicket for the day saw us bowl Cookham out for 118 and this wicket not only sealed our eighth 25 point win of the season but also promotion to Division 3! A wonderful achievement which everyone should be very proud of.
However, the first goal at the start of this season was to be promoted to Division 3 which has now been achieved. The second goal was to win the division and be confirmed as champions of Division 4A. We welcome second place Farnham Royal to Shardeloes on Saturday knowing that a win in this fixture will ensure we finish the season as champions! Bring on Saturday!
