Highgate v AMERSHAM CC Sunday 1st X1 on Sun 29 Jun 2014 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 5 Wickets - Revised target due to rain

Match report A frustrating day for all members of the Sunday 1st XI. For a second year in a row, we have failed to win away in the league at Highgate. I have tweeted Kevin Pietersen to ensure that he has a free day in his calendar for our rematch next year.

A long journey over to North London saw a familiar ground with a questionable outfield and green-topped wicket. After winning the toss we elected to bat. If it was a Saturday match the top 5 would be going mad, but this is a Sunday and normal cricketing customs do not apply.

We managed to see off the two opening bowlers with little damage. At drinks we were going along at 5s thanks, in part, to an aggressive knock by Stephan(o) Joubert at the beginning. Mention should also go to Adam Ali who, as usual, looked good for his runs. The big partnership came in the middle overs between Hugh (Whoo) Jackson and Alex Tilbury who must have put on 100 for the 4th wicket. A mix of cross batted power hitting and some classy drives (as one would assume, not an even mix). We ended up with 282. Funny moment of the innings involved Jack Roger's pre-knock statement of 'I will soon have a batting slot in the 1s', only to have his middle stump rocked back by one that moved a little. I'll keep that selection email to Luke in drafts for now Jack....

Tea was fantastic, and I'm going keep the memory of it in the Amersham database as piece of culinary history. Two bowls of noodles with chicken, pre-prepared sausage rolls, and plenty of Madeira cake. Highgate know how to prepare a tea.

Unfortunately, as our attention focused on tea, the weather decided to take a turn and a 45 minute shower delay saw the Highgate total reduced solely by run rate. Unfortunately the Sunday League rulebook doesn't take into account sense when the inevitable English rain strikes. We lost 6 overs, and they needed 244 from 39 with all 10 wickets in hand.

Stuart and Jack bowled well early on with a lot of good balls which were unfortunately not rewarded with wickets. Haseeb Ali bowled an economical and consistent 6 overs. Stephan(o) picked up 4 in his spell, but with the short Highgate boundary, runs were hard to conserve. We counted 7 missed opportunities in the car on the way home which, in any game of cricket, is going to be damaging. The captain could not quite produce a match winning spell of bowling and, as the term goes, 'got pumped'. Highgate won the match with an over to spare.

Next league game is home in a fortnight to Crouch End and we should get quickly back on winning ways. Top 2 go up in this league and we have every intention on capitalising on a Highgate slip up.
