Harefield v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 19 Apr 2014 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won Won By 2 wickets

Match report A rusty start to the season for both sides ended with a win for Amersham following a classy 74* from Chris Cann.
Predictably, given this was not a competitive fixture, Jackson won the toss and inserted Harefield. Alex Lines slipped straight into last season's groove bowling tightly and claiming the wicket of Simon Macey. Tidey and Vyas then consolidated, with the help of some inconsistent Amersham bowling, until Viney coerced a loose shot from Tidey. Newcomer Stephan Joubert then made the telling contribution, getting impressive dip with his left arm spinners and ripping out the Harefield middle order. Despite good knocks from Ogden and King, Harefield were dismissed with 6 overs remaining, their total of 230 supplemented by 29 wides, which were spread unevenly amongst the bowlers.

The tried and tested partnership of Rob Viney and Bruce Friderichs started well, with Viney particularly productive off his pads, before King trapped Viney in front in typical early season fashion. The introduction of Narota quickly saw the downfall of Friderichs caught at backward point, and Amersham were struggling. Joubert and Chris Cann came together and managed to stop the bleeding for around 10 overs, Joubert through resolute defence and Cann through playing and missing. However, when Joubert and Bowcock were dismissed in quick succession, the writing was on the wall for Amersham.
One of the strengths of our side is a very long batting line up, and the arrival of Hugh Jackson (with the knowledge that there remained significant batting ability still to come) changed the momentum of the game. Both Jackson and Cann were fluent in an even-time partnership of 85 in 14 overs which was littered with boundaries, most memorably two enormous sixes from Cann. When Jackson was out for 37 there was still work to be done, but Cann with support from the elder Jackson, Andy Viney and Stuart Rogers, saw the visitors over the line with time to spare. Harefield too were guilty of too manhy wides.

So, a decent start to the season. Work is required with the ball and in the field, and we all need to quickly get used to the fielding and bowling restrictions of the 50 over format we will be playing half our games over this season.
