AMERSHAM CC Sunday 1st X1 v Oxford on Sun 26 Apr 2015 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 5 runs
Match report
Another year, another frustrating cup result for the Amersham Sunday 1st XI. After losing last year to North Maidenhead, we were keen for good cup run but came up short by 5 runs against an Oxford side which came equipped with training gear and matching tracksuits.
Oxford won the toss and batted first at an overcast Shardeloes. We all thought this may have been a gamble but the hard surface produced good bounce and an even carry. We were unlucky not to dismiss the openers early with Jack, Stuart and Haseeb all frequently beating the bat. At one point it seemed Oxford would run away with a score of 300+ until Robbie Marsh, aided by an economical Luke Jackson, really turned the screw. Rarely do you see a spell from a leg spinner that doesn't include a bad ball but Robbie managed his spell with great control and precision, taking four crucial Oxford wickets and turning the game in our favour. He has most definitely earned his Saturday 1st XI call up for next week. The highlight of the innings included Foxey's return to Shardeloes (one for Blangie) which resulted, of course, in a run out completed by Ben himself.
I would have taken a chase of 233 before the game started and backed us to win; a challenge so nearly successful. We had the perfect start to the innings with Stuart bludgeoning the ball to all parts of the ground and Adam looking as solid as ever. However three quick wickets saw a slow 25 - 35 over period and we were chasing 8 r.p.o for the last 10. Credit has to go to Adam Ali who never became frustrated and built a strong position for us to win the match. Going into the last over we needed 19 runs to win the match with Luke Jackson on strike. The first ball was a dot, and lesser important run out. The second and third balls of the over went for four and we maintained belief with 11 needed from 3. The fourth ball was a dot, 11 from 2. However the penultimate ball sailed for six over the bowlers head leaving us needing 5 from the last ball. A length delivery saw a dot ball through to the keeper and the end of the match.
Great performance by the team and a really good game of cricket. Hopefully the lessons learnt from the this match will improve our performances in the weeks to come.
