AMERSHAM CC Sunday 1st X1 v Thame Town on Sun 13 Jul 2008 at 14:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 2 wickets

Match report After last weeks game was called off due to the weather and the torrential downpours during the week, there really was only one decision if we had won the toss and that was to field first. Inzi went out with the opposition skipper and lost the toss and was waiting for the inevitable 'We would like to bowl'. However, Thame decided to have a bat, which was a suprise and gave Amersham even more hope, knowing that the 1st X1 had only scored 87 the previous day on the same track. The decision to bat first was proving to be a disaster for Thame as they lost their top 3 with only 26 on the scoreboard. Enter West and Binnee who put on 79 for the fourth wicket until West was caught acrobatically by Elmo who was keeping for the second day running. Binnee followed shortly having added a further 56 for the 5th wicket after attempting to take Inzi for a 3rd run, he pinged one in and Elmo turned and threw the stumps down at the non strikers end with the batsmen short of his ground even with a spectacular dive. Thame had recovered well and reached 210 off their 40 overs. Evan and Stuart bowled fantastically well with 3 wickets a piece. Alex Tilbury managed to hold 2, yes 2 catches in a match for the first time ever! It was a great performance by all in the field and we went into tea content that we could achieve our first win of the season.

We had to get off to a good start and that we did with Andy(37) and Elmo(38) setting a solid platform. However Thame removed pace and brought on the spin of their overseas, Bhatti, who turned the game on its head with a mesmorising spell of 8 overs 6 maidens 3 wickets for 6 runs. First Elmo was caught behind off his glove, then Alex was stumped and Inzi went back to a ball that he pushed at, bounced under the bat and hit the stumps for a golden duck. James D came out facing a hat trick ball and also knowing that Bhatti had 2 overs still to come. When Andy fell things looked bleak until the lower order decided that it was going to be Amersham's day. Evan blasted 3 sixes into the cornfield for a quickfire 20 and James D(11) and Chris C(6) contributed vital runs. Wickets were falling and we had to put a partnership together if we were to win. Ned 'the giraffe' Kilgannon strode to the crease and after some encouragement from the crowd, hit 27 runs in quick time and Amersham, who at one stage needed 50 off 5 overs, now needed 17 off 18 balls. We didn't need the big shots, just composure and a bit of thought. Ned fell to a short ball wanting to end it quickly, handing Stuart Rogers the pressure of winning the game. Having been a star with the ball earlier it was time for Stuart to come of age and lead us to victory. Harry joined him for the last few balls (walking out to 'Land of Hope and Glory' from the band in the marquee). It's taken a while, but we managed our first win of the season and now need to push on to finish the season strongly. Next week is Bucks Cup quarter finals - let's beat Burnham and then we can entertain Wycombe back at Shardeloes!
