AMERSHAM CC U15A Strikers v Penn & Tylers Green on Fri 13 May 2005 at 18:00
AMERSHAM CC Won 109 runs
Match report
Last evening saw the Amersham U15's host Penn & Tylers Green in the first game of the 2005 National U15 Knock-Out Championship, which Amersham were runners up in last season.
Frantic arrangements were made by Jemima and Paul, who managed to get us an X1 together, with Elliot being collected from Haileybury (by special dispensation from his housemaster) and arriving at 17:59 for an 18:00 start.
Having won the toss, we elected to bat and Jack & Olly opened against some pretty accurate bowling.
With the score on 35, Olly clipped one to point and Elliot came in, only to be struck in the back of the achilles a few balls alter by a fielding return.
Quick singles, which were never part of either Jack or Elliot's plans (for different reasons) didn't much feature as Jack saw to any short bowling from one end and Elliot blocked out a particularly accurate spell from their first change bowler at the other. Previous sixes competition experience came in useful here as the field was pushed back and the ball was dropped in the middle of the pitch on a number of occasions as both batsmen walked a few runs to keep the strike rotated.
Neither batsman gave much in the way of chances and Jack carried his bat through to the end of the 20 overs finishing on 99 NO, supported by Elliot on 29 NO and the Amersham score on 150.
I have never seen such a lively fielding performance by Amersham as the field all ran between the overs - it was only after it was explained to me that there was a party involving some Berkhamstead boys later that evening that all became clear.
The Penn & Tylers innings got off to a bad start for them as Matt Mackay removed their opener with a trademark unplayable yorker as his second delivery.
In the 4th over U15 debutant Alex Tilbury claimed his first scalp as he tempted their No.3 into giving a catch. In his 4th over, he captured another, by trapping a very static No.4 in front of the stumps LBW.
First change bowling then took over, with Jack first up - Oh dear, we thought as the first delivery gave the opposition the first 4 of their innings, but their elation was very short lived as Jack took a wicket with each of the next 4 balls, firstly removing both of their top scorers (12 each) bowled and then getting past both of the next two, allowing Elliot to catch them out of their ground.
So it was 21-7 at the end of the ninth over and the boys were still running between the overs (the girls might still be warm when they got there!) A slight lull descended for a couple of overs as Olly bamboozled the tail from the other end and was very unlucky to have a bottom edge catch behind the stumps not given.
Jack picked up two more wickets as the game drew towards it's inevitable conclusion and Olly delivered the coup de grace with the final ball of his spell.
