AMERSHAM CC U15A Strikers v Marlow Park on Fri 10 Jun 2005 at
AMERSHAM CC Won 9 Wickets

Match report Well, I had my worries about this one when the opposition turned up 11 strong and quite big - we only had 9 ( 5 x U15, 2 x U14, 1 x U13 and 1 x U12) as the resources were stretched by a few non-availables and an U13 game on the same evening.

Anyway we took to the field and Mat Mackay's loosener struck Elliot on the end of the left thumb and went for a bye, reducing Elliot to keeping with one hand thereafter - not an auspicious start, especially as their openers were Ed Cassidy and JC Potgeiter, both of whom we knew of old.

The opposition got off to a frighteningly quick start and were 32 after the first 4 overs, when Jack taking over from Matt trapped JC in front. This didn't seem to slow them down though and they were 72 for just one at the end of the ninth - a big chase looked a distinct possibility.

At the tenth over Olly put himself on and removed No 1 and No 3 within 4 balls - things were beginning to look up and at the end of the eleventh, Jack had bowled No 5 in the final over of his spell and the opposition were 81 for 4.

By the end of the 15th, debutant Ben Parham had had No 4 well caught by Matt Mackay, but at 112 for 5 a big push in the last 5 overs could have given us a problem, but Olly came to the rescue with a wicket maiden, so 112 for 6 after 16 and not a lot of bowling left!

Extreme measures were called for , so Jack and Elliot exchanged places and Elliot elected to bowl the last four overs in tandem with Matt.

Elliot comes tearing in off 3 paces, bowls a loopy slightly short one, the batsman swings and Ben Parham takes a blinder on the square leg boundary one-handed - 115-7 and 3 overs left.

Matt bowls his third over and gets his radar on line again with the last ball, out goes their No 9 - 121-8.

Elliot gives 5 away in his last over the 19th and it's 128-8, Matt bowls his last and they end up on 133-8 - 17 less in the last 10 overs, than in the first 10 - unusual. Given that we gave away 24 extras, the fielding was extremely tight, with good contributions coming from Stuart Rogers and another debutant the U12 James Dobrey-Carey.

Did I need to worry though, what would happen if we lost a couple of quick wickets, could Elliot bat?

Did I heck. Olly and Jack built it carefully and had added 61 by the end of the 10th over, still pretty tight, but they had seen off the openers and began to open up.

Jack went for the big one and departed in the 13th over when the score was 98 and in came Toby Phillips, a special guest appearance by him, and no others were needed. He and Olly saw us through to the end in 17.2 overs.

Olly believed that he was on 48 at the end of the game, as I did, having believed the oppositions scorer - it was only when I couldn't get the figures to add up, that I discovered that with the last shot of the game, Olly had got his 50.
