Beaconsfield v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 24 May 2008 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 1 wicket

Match report Amersham narrowly lost a thrilling contest at a blustery Beaconsfield. Jackson again won the toss and elected to bat on an excellent wicket. Fleming and Viney began with purpose, with Fleming finding the gaps with a number of audacious pulls and hooks, and Viney timing the ball beautifully through both the off and the on side. The introduction of Ahmed slowed the scoring rate, and the resultant pressure forced Fleming, with the score on 85, to call for a single that wasn't really on, and he was caught well short by Gurnell's direct hit. Cann and Viney continued in the same vein, adding another 43 before Cann was out pulling a ball that was not quite short enough. This triggered a collapse that ended up being material to the final result, as Colquhoun, Viney, Viney, Owen and Emsley were dismissed in the space of a few overs. A few lusty blows at the end by Ash and Jackson got Amersham to 189, which was probably 30 or 40 runs short of what should have been given the Fleming and Viney's start.

Amersham's response to this slight disappoinment was excellent, with a faultless fielding display of intensity which kept Beaconsfield on the back foot. Coleman holed out to Colquhoun at mid off in the second over, leaving Mahmood and Sherry to pepper the boundaries for 15 overs. The dismissal of Mahmood, with the score at 65, was crucial just before drinks were taken. Holt and Owen took the new ball, and each took two wickets to reduce Beaconsfield to 97 for 6 with 20 overs remaining. 8 overs later one of the best pieces of outfielding you could see in club cricket effected an unlikely run out, with the older generation in the team looking on in awe and envy as Holt casually pinged one in over the bails from 80 yards to turn an "easy 2" into an "uncomfortable 1 and three quarters" for Hussain. The next partnership was the crucial one though, as Gurnell kept the scoreboard ticking over, and Ahmed made things look easy from the start. Their partnership of 48 in 8 overs made Beaconfield firm favourites, with 18 required off 5 overs. Jackson decided to lower the tone by bringing himself onto bowl, and was rewarded with the filthy dismissal of Ahmed for 35. Collins and Gurnell continued to play sensibly, until Holt's return dismissed Gurnell with 7 still needed. Beaconsfield's last pair scampered between the wickets so that 3 were required from the last over. Holt was unlucky not to cap a superb individual performance with a direct hit run out that would have one the match, and Mahood smeared a full toss through the off side to win the match with 2 balls remaining.
