AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Tring Park 2 on Sat 14 Jun 2008 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Amersham welcomed Tring Park 2nd XI to Shardeloes on Saturday and won by 6 wickets. Tring won the toss and opted to bat first on a lovely afternoon and began confidently. Chris Cann bowled an effective opening spell, conceding only 22 off 9 overs and was unlucky not to catch the edge from one of a number of airy wafts essayed by the Tring openers. Tom Dixon complemented Cann's pace with his mixture of swing and was unlucky not to claim a wicket as two difficult chances were floored off his spell. Pusey & Steptoe, Tring's openers, began to increase the pace but Chris Owen induced a false shot from Steptoe which he played onto his stumps. This triggered a flurry of wickets, three to Owen and one to Mustapha Rajabali, in 4 overs whih changed the complexion of the game. The ground fielding throughout was excellent as the team followed the example set, unusually, by David Atkinson. this helped allpy considerable pressure and there were a number of near miss run outs. At drinks Tring were 77-4 and they never recovered real momentum after that. Lloyd Brooks batted grittily for 50, and he received some support from the tail, but two wickets for Cann and two for David Atkinson prevented the visitors launching an assault as the innings came to an end.
Two early wickets left Amersham at 18 for 2, but Cann and Dan Colquhoun built a partnership of 40 before Colquhoun fell. This haralded the beginning of the partnership that won the game for Amersham. Luke Jackson and Chris Cann put on 78 in 14 overs, batting fluently and aggressively. They mixed firmly struck boundaries-Jackson was particularly strong through midwicket and punished anything short of a length while Cann drove anything overpitched firmly down the ground with good running. This put further pressure on Tring and they had no answer. Cann fell with 40 needed, but Richard Stephenson and Jackson finished the game with a flurry of boundaries. A deserved win for Amersham moved them into fourth place in the Morrant Thames Valley League, 7 points behind Chesham. With one third of the season now gone, Beaconsfield are clearly the team to beat in the division since they have a 22 point lead already. However, the two teams that have pushed them hardest so far have been Amersham (who lost by 1 wicket with 2 balls to go) and Chesham (who drew their game).
