Wokingham 2 v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 21 Jun 2008 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 35 runs
Match report
Last over wins are rare enough in cricket, but last ball wins are exceptional, except perhaps in the condensed environment of 20 over cricket. However, Amersham clinched a 25 point win at Wokingham off the last ball of the game as Matt Ash claimed a catch at 3rd slip off the bowling of the admirable Chris Cann at 8.05pm. Fortunately it was the longest day of the year or the encircling gloom would have prevented play some time previously. This was a very entertaining and dramatic game of cricket, featuring a good deal of excellent batting and rather less excellent bowling. Having been inserted Amersham took full advantage of the effect the damp outfield had on the bowlers' ability to control the ball. Andrew Viney played one of his most fluent and entertaining innings as he hit 12 fours in his 67. His timing and running between the wickets were excellent, and his efforts set the tempo for the rest of the innings. The antipodean Chrises, Fleming and Cann, were both recipients of very good deliveries from the impressive Wes Budd, but Dan Colquhoun put his recent frustrations behind him with a finely paced innings. He played himself in solidly and gradually accelerated, reaching 50 with the first of five sixes off 65 balls. His second 50 took rather less time, coming off a mere 18 balls as he accelerated Amersham's innings towards its close. One of the joys of playing at Wokingham is the variety of targets a batsman has. Colquhoun took full advantage of this, hitting the Waterloo to Reading railway line and the 10 pin bowling centre car park, as well as the more common target of the cricket club car park. He received good support from Luke Jackson (36) and Chris Owen (27*) who batted intelligently in support of the ever more impressive Colquhoun. Declaring before the allotted 52 overs has been completed is always an attacking strategy, but it seemed a reasonable decision with 264 on the board. However, Wokingham, to their credit, made their intention to win the game clear from the first ball, whcih disappeared over mid on for 4. Amersham's usual tactic of opening with the spin of Mustapha Rajabali and David Atkinson did not meet with its usual success this week as the Wokingham openers struck the ball sweetly and aggressively. A neatly executed run out by Andy Viney brought a breakthrough, but did not change Wokingham's game plan. Ryan Hillas played some excellent attacking shots in his 59, but Chris Cann (5-54) was warming to the task. He bowled with good control and no little pace for the second week running and his first spell went some way towards slowing Wokingham's rate of scoring. Chris Owen (2-54) claimed a pair of wickets in quick succession to bring Amersham further back into the game. However, one of these dismissals brought the evergreen Simon Myles to the crease. Demonstrating that the skills that once brought him the accolade of being the 'best English player outside the first class game' have not dimmed with the passing of time he mixed clever placement, judicious aggression and a fine eye for manipulating the strike to play his side into a winning position. However, when Fisher launched Atkinson (1-42) into the safe hands of Cann at long off the pressure on Myles increased. A tight over from Cann increased this still further and it resulted in Myles' off stump cartwheeling towards 2nd slip. This dismissal probably ended Wokingham's chances of victory, but some more first rate bowling from Cann resulted in an Amersham victory. Subscribing to the maxim that bowling is actually a simple activity Cann persisted in bowling at the stumps of tailenders who were unable to cope with his pace. Duncan was caught LBW and Jain was clean bowled, leaving Amersham 14 balls at the last pair. Budd protected his partner well, but was undone by the very last ball of the game, which he edged into the very safe hands of Matt Ash at 3rd slip.
This victory re-inforced Amersham's position in 4th place in the Morrant Thames Valley League, and continued a good run which the Shardeloes team intends to stretch further against Kew next Saturday.
