Kew v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 30 Aug 2008 at 12:30
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 8 wickets

Match report A careless batting display on a dry and slow wicket put too much pressure on Amersham in the field as Kew ran out comfortable winners.

Jackson won the toss and again elected to bat on a surface that looked like it would crumble later in the day. Fleming fell early, unluckily caught and bowled, and Cann, having struck 3 impressive boundaries, nicked off. The Vineys set about recovery and consolidation with judicious strokeplay and good running between wickets, forcing Kew skipper Knowles to resort to spin before 20 overs had been bowled. It quickly became apparent that the wicket would turn and bounce, and the middle order proceeded to throw the match away under pressure. Viney played across a ball that was too full to pull, and Jackson executed a cut shot poorly to be caught at cover to reduce Amersham to 81 for 4. Colquhoun then played like he was batting on a road, and at 123 for 4, Kew were under pressure. Colquhoun (33) then picked the wrong ball for the wrong shot, skying to cover, and Owen, Haddock and Rob Viney (44) soon followed to reduce Amersham to 140 for 8. Ward and Dixon struck a few blows, but Dixon and debutant Cullen-Jones were adjudged LBW with Amersham 1 sort of 2 more batting points.

Amersham started with reasonably tight spin, but Kew presented a batting lesson to the visitors. Batting in this format is all about partnerships, and by the time Andy Viney had Friderichs caught at slip with the score on 106 the game was to all intents and purposes won. Dave Lowe (71) and Dunusinghe saw the game pretty much to a conclusion. Cullen-Jones bowled well on debut and was unlucky not to take a wicket.

The Shardeloes side enter the final game of the season safe from relegation in 5th place. With the batting power at the team's disposal, we should really be looking to do better next year (with, hopefully, the addition of a bowler). Many of Amersham's batsmen could do well to learn from the likes of Kew's Friderichs, whose ruthlessness and strong mental approach this season has seen him score nearly 1000 League runs.
