AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 v Hampton Hill on Sat 24 May 2008 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won 54 Runs
Match report
Just what the doctor ordered!
In a crucial clash at Shardeloes, Amersham won the toss and bravely decided to bat first, knowing that they had to occupy the crease for their full allocation of overs and post a total of over 200. The wicket looked good, with pace and bounce for the quicks and turn especially from the pavilion end. Nick Piper and Jonny Andrews opened the batting steadily before Andrews was dismissed miscueing a pull with the score on 29 after 10 overs. Evan Hamilton-Pike (27) then joined Piper and played aggresively in taking the score to 63 before the fall of the second wicket. Piper was playing the anchor role and was ably assisted by the Amersham middle order in taking the score up to 139 for 5 after 36 overs, but there was still work to be done to achieve maximum batting points. David Sidebottom, promoted to number seven on the back of some good batting displays, played maturely and sensibly in a crucial partnership of 40 runs before Piper was dismissed for a captains innings of 70 with the score on 179. This gave Hanook Gill (15 no) and Sidebottom licence to thrill with an entertaining 30 run partnership with Sidebottom eventually being dimissed for an Amersham best of 43 and captain Nick Piper very happy with a total of 222 for 8. Amersham had no hesitation in carrying on with the old ball and unleashing the spin twins of Mushty and Ginger Mushty on the opening pair. Amersham applied pressure but the wickets weren't coming, until a fine catch at backward point by Olly Haddock set Amersham on their way. Piper decided to take the new ball and was immediately rewarded when Charlie Holloway trapped the number 3 plumb in front. This brought Hampton Hill's best batsman, Fullicks (64) to the crease, who was prepared to play his shots and keep them up with the required run rate. After a switch of ends for Rajabali and the introduction of Hanook Gill from the cornfield end, Amersham had their tails up and ran through the rest of the Hampton Hill batsmen. Rajabali bowled with great flight and guile claiming 7-52 off his 20 overs, whilst at the same time Gill bowled an excellent 11 over spell of controlled seam bowling, claiming the last wicket with just over three overs to spare, finishing with 2-46. This was an excellent all-round team performance with telling contributions from all members of the team. Although there will be harder matches to come, the result should give the side a lot of confidence as they face Cove, also near the foot of the table, next week.
Nick Piper.
