Aldershot v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 28 Jun 2008 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Lost 5 Wkts
Match report
Amersham slipped to their seventh defeat in eight league matches at Aldershot last Saturday. After winning the toss Amersham decided to bat first on a hard fast track. Piper (23) & Sidebottom (53) once again opened the innings and at 77 for no wicket after 16 overs were looking well set. Sidebottom had batted reall well and deserved his maiden league fifty for Amersham, but in a rush to get to fifty he called a single that was never on and ran out his captain! Unfortunately Sidebottom was soon dismissed and the usual clatter of wickets ensued with only Emsley (20) and David McKay (21*) offering any resistance. The run rate slowed to a crawl with only 81 runs coming off the last 36 overs of which 19 came from the last two! Amersham limping to 158-8 off 52 overs. The only consolation was that at least we batted the full complement of overs for the first time this season.
We followed the tactics of Aldershot and started with the old ball with the hope that the spin of Sidebottom and guile of Ward would give Amersham an early breakthrough. This was not to be as both openers took the game to Amersham with aggressive batting against some wayward bowling and Aldershot raced to fifty quite quickly. The introduction of Tom Dixon (1-35)& Matthew McKay (2-17, who bowled an excellent hostile spell, gave Amersham a glimmer of hope but in the end Aldershot achieved their target with 15 overs to spare.
Yet again we let a good start disappear with some loose shots in the middle order and although were not dismissed we let their spinners get on top of us, which made it difficult for the lower order break the shackles. The batsmen have to take responsibility and give our bowlers something to work with. With players returning from school and university we hope that we can reverse our fortunes in the second half of the season. We need to win at least four or five games and pick-up bonus points from the others if we are going to avoid relegation.
Nick Piper.
