Hampton Hill v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 26 Jul 2008 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won 178 Runs
Match report
A superb all-round team effort from Amersham 2's as they beat Hampton Hill by an impressive margin of 178 runs. The twenty five points gained has at last lifted the doom and despondency of the season so far and given Amersham a slight flicker of hope in their quest to avoid relegation. Realistically we need to win all our remaining games as we are still 42 points behind the rest of the pack.
Pipes won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first in the stifling heat. Opening up with himself and Elliot Ketteringham in a rather one sided opening partnership of 102 runs. Yours truly contributing a paltry 10 runs whilst at the other end Elliot was taking the opening bowlers apart with brutal strokeplay on both sides of the wicket. Elliot steamed to his fifty and carried on in making a classy 86, before he tried his hand at a rather agricultural slog and was adjudged LBW. The dismissal of Ketteringham obviously unsettled his skipper, who thought he could bat the same way and was immediately proved wrong! Amersham quickly lost their way and were looking down the barrel at 128 for 5. How wrong could I have been as Messrs.Dolleymore & Aylott proceeded to smash the ball to all parts of the ground in an unbroken stand of 154. James batted really well in achieving his maiden hundred of his career in the last over of the innings. What can one say about Tim Aylott! Playing his first game for two years and getting a classy 50* with a six of the last ball of the 52nd over. Both James & Tim batted with great responsibility and gave us the steel in the middle order we have been lacking all season. Amersham taking tea at 282 for five.
With the pitch starting to take turn, it was no suprise that Amersham opened up with the spin twins of Sidebottom & Kilgannon using the old ball. Before we knew it we had got them five wickets down with only 26 on the board. Two wickets each for Sidebottom (2-28) & Kilgannon (2-47) together with two run outs from Sidebottom & McKay (catch as well)and an excellent leg side stumping from Elliot gave the skipper the luxury of taking the new ball against the Hampton tail. Matthew McKay bowled with great pace, although initially his line was too much outside off stump. This the captain noticed, in a rare moment of wisdom, and encouraged him to bowl around the wicket. This immediately paid dividends as Matthew proceeded to re-arrange the stumps of the last three batsmen in taking 3-9 and Tim Aylott chipped in with 1-10 in his first five overs for two seasons! Hampton Hill subsiding to 104 all out and Amersham claiming only their second win this season.
This game was played in a great spirit and I would like to thank the whole team for their hardwork and encouragement of each other.
Nick Piper.
