AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 v Hillingdon Manor on Sat 16 Aug 2008 at 12:30

Match report
In a bottom of the table clash visitors Hillingdon Manor elected to bat on an overcast day, with quite a damp wicket. The two openers got off to a very fast, allbeit occasionally streaky start and brought up the 50 in no time. Good tight spells from James Harmer and stand-in skipper Steve Emsley helped to reduce the scoring rate after the initial burst, and the introduction of Hanook Gill further restricted the openers, resulting in Emsley and Gill each picking up the openers for 35. The scoring then lulled whilst the Amersham seam attack and strong fielding put further pressure on the Hillingdon Manor middle order, and the introduction of David McKay, bowling an excellent spell of 3-29 up the hill, ripped through their middle order cheaply, with brother Matthew McKay also contributing with two wickets at the other end. Unfortunately from this point on the Hillingdon skipper, Akram (59*), and the lower order staged a counter attack, and recovered the total from 175-7 to close on 233-8, a respectable score. Nevertheless the young 5-prong Amersham seam attack had all contributed well and the fielding performance had enabled the home side to put pressure on throughout the innings.
In reply Amersham's top order continued a season-long trend of making starts but failing to kick on and make a more telling score, with 4 of the top 6 batsmen making 20 or more. In-form James Dolleymore and wicketkeeper Dominic Haddock top-scoring with 35, but in truth more was required for the home team to enforce victory. A collapse from then on left Amersham reeling on 150-7, with the visitors' mix of tight seam bowling and spinners sensing the end was close. In response, supposed tail-enders Gill, Matthew McKay and Harmer all dug in and kept the opposition bowlers at bay, passing the 175 mark via a number of well-struck shots from McKay (20). Tight defensive techniques from Gill and Harmer, displaying a great deal or concentration and resilience, ensured Amersham did not lose their final wicket in the 8 overs available, resulting in questionable celebration and antagonisation of the opposition's more vocal team members.
A well-contested draw was not a good result for either side, but Amersham can take heart from the way the lower order fought after a strong seam bowling and fielding performance.
