Kew v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 19 Aug 2006 at
AMERSHAM CC Won 3 Wkts
Match report
Amersham climbed to third place in TVL Division 1 by toppling league leaders Kew on Saturday. Owing to a wet pitch and the presence of threatening rain clouds, Amersham went against their successful strategy of recent weeks by electing to bowl first after winning the toss. However, Kew won the early exchanges as they raced to 130-2 from the first 26 overs, with Kew number three Ali Jaffer scoring a classy 58.
With their seamers failing to restrict the run-scoring, Amersham were brought back into the game by their spin bowlers. Nick Moore immediately claimed the vital wicket of Jaffer and combined superbly with David Atkinson as Kew were able to score only 45 runs during the second half of their innings while losing eight wickets in the process. The spinners were aided by excellent fielding, exemplifed by a cool run out from Chris "Iceman" Sowden and two excellent catches taken by the enthusiastic Tom Dixon, both of which Dixon celebrated with some Christiano Ronaldo-style cheekiness that enraged the partisan home crowd.
Amersham's run chase got off to a faltering start due to a combination of testing Kew seam bowling and embarassing shot selection from the top order and with Amersham at 20-3, Kew were scenting a crushing victory. A partial recovery was then engineered by the consistent pairing of Chris Fleming and Luke Jackson who saw off the new ball and began to up the scoring rate against the change bowling. After both Fleming and Jackson fell, Chris Sowden (57 not out) guided Amersham towards victory, well assisted by plucky contributions from Brad Holt and Tom Dixon. With five runs required and one ball of the penultimate over remaining, Sowden unnerved the Kew bowler with the glint of steely determination in his eye and smashed the ball over the adjacent South Circular to seal a famous victory.
