NPL Teddington v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 05 Aug 2006 at
AMERSHAM CC Won 167 Runs
Match report
A fine all-round performance from Amersham earned a crushing victory over fourth-placed NPL Teddington on Saturday. After electing to bat and getting away to a brisk start, Amersham were pegged back by tight bowling from both Thomlinson and Laghari; the latter a particular menace as he dropped his off-breaks onto a perfect length while finding turn and bounce. However, Andrew Viney (76) and Chris Fleming (59) battled through this difficult period and picked up the run rate, both men driving strongly through extra cover and over midwicket as they engineering a match turning partnership. Entering the last twenty overs Amersham were well placed with nine wickets in hand and reached an excellent total thanks to the clean shot-making of Luke Jackson and Chris Sowden.
Even with so many runs on the board, Amersham took tea uneasily, mindful of the brutal innings of 166 Laghari had inflicted upon them earlier in the season. By opening with the spin of Mustapha Rajabali and David Atkinson, Amersham were able to restrict the early run scoring, even if wickets were not initially forthcoming as a sequence of mishits from the Teddington batsmen did not go to hand. The persistent left-arm wiles of Rajabali accounted for the first four wickets to fall as he flighted the ball skillfully to lure the batsmen into indiscretions. David Atkinson then chipped in with the big wicket of Laghari - who had looked in ominous form before being well held by Jackson at slip - and followed it up with two LBW verdicts in the same over.
Following this body blow, Teddington looked only to bat out the remaining overs for a draw with Kelly and Ford defending the spinners stoutly. This encouraged Amersham to take advantage of the new ball available with immediate effect as Sowden delivered the perfect away-swinger to have Ford caught behind. Young seamer Brad Holt then finished the game in style, first bouncing out Rutt before drawing a nick from Kelly to complete a fine team performance.
