AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Chesham on Sat 26 Apr 2008 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
Traditional local rivalries were renewed in good spirit on a delightful early summer Saturday afternoon as Chesham visited Shardeloes. Luke Jackson won the toss and elected to bat first, but it was to be the ball that would dominate the game as it unfolded. Amersham's new recruit Chris Cann was soon at the wicket and able to show something of his class as he reached 25 before being undone by a combination of overambition and the slightly unpredictable nature of the early season wicket. His efforts, and those of Luke Jackson (27) were the high points of the Amersham batting. Chesham will be encouraged by the obvious quality of their young bowlers. Jason Rance (2-18), Tom Crick (3-15) and Ali Birkby (2-18) all bowled well, though it remains to be seen whether the shock of being gloriously coverdriven by perpetual tailender Atkinson will have any lasting effect on Birkby.
121 never looked daunting as a target, but Amersham bowled and fielded well to ensure that the contest remained tight. Cann removed Hitesh Modi, well caught down the legside by wicketkeeper Richard Stephenson and Hanook Gill induced a false shot, with a little assistance from the wicket, from Rob Maier. Duncan Ward bowled a particularly miserly spell of left arm swing and was rewarded with one wicket, and David Atkinson's legspin proved very difficult to get away as well. However, Ali Birkby and Jason Rance, fresh from their expolits with the ball, proved very capable batsmen as well. They read the game situation well and waited for bad balls to come along, eventually passing the target with 3.2 overs to spare.
Overall this was a good warm up, which showed the importance of valuing one's wicket and that every run accumulated makes the opposition's job harder.
