Match Report Amersham v Thame Town
HCPL Div 2
Amersham slip up at Thame
The juggernaut that had become Amersham CC with 9 wins from 9 hit a brick wall at lowly Thame last Saturday and dented their promotion hopes.
Some unusually loose bowling and some good batting by Thame number 3 Matthew MacDonald (78) supported lower down the order by Michael Beard (35) and Michael Hoggs (20*) enabled the home side to reach a respectable 205 all out.
This ought to have been a target well within the reach of the Amersham batsmen but only Rob Viney (47) and Maduka Lyanapathiranage (35) made any sort of contribution to the run chase and despite the return of influential all-rounder Rich Stephenson, when he was bowled for just 13 after battling away to keep the innings going the rest of the batsmen fell like flies as the visitors were bowled out for 155, 50 runs short of their target.
The victory for Thame does not help local rivals Gerrards Cross in their battle to avoid relegation and seriously dented the promotion hopes for the Amersham side. Just 9 points adrift of Oxford in 2nd place it is not all over yet but next week’s clash at Shardeloes with leaders Horspath is now a must win game.
Amersham 2nd XI had their match abandoned against GX 2nd’s and slipped to 3rd in Div 3b of the Thames Valley League while the 3rd XI maintained their 39 point lead at the top of TVL Div 5a with a 6 wicket win at Chalfont St Peter.
The hosts won the toss and batted first on a slow wicket and the Amersham attack took wickets at regular intervals to restrict them to 161 all out. Chamath Gunartne with 3-31 and Paul Weston 3-36 were the pick of the Amersham bowlers, well supported by Callum Tilbury 2-33 and Mohnish Mirchandani who was unlucky to only pick up one wicket in his 12 overs of controlled off spin.
The Amersham reply began in watchful fashion before an injury to Graeme McPhillips brought Nick Nguyen to the crease who compiled an increasingly fluent 58 before playing on to leave Amersham wobbling slightly at 125-4 with rainclouds gathering. It was then a matter of runs against imminent rain as Stuart Rogers, in his first match back in action after dislocating his elbow earlier in the season, and Weston knocked off the remaining runs with the final scampered single heralding a downpour that would have arguably ended the match anyway!
Next week sees the visit of Princes Risborough, with Amersham needing to secure just 6 points from their remaining 2 games to wrap up promotion.
