OMT 2nd v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 07 Aug 2004 at 1:30pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
Despite being totally destroyed by leaders OMT in the field, Amersham II at least showed some spirit with the bat, to save the match and prevent a humiliation.
OMT won the toss on a blazing hot day, perfect pitch with fast outfield, facing an under-strength bowling attack, and not-surprisingly opted to bat first. Wright attacked from the start punishing anything full or short as the bowlers wilted in the sunshine. At 129-0 after 24 overs, Amersham had a chance to get back into the contest, when Mike Garvey bowled a brilliantly disguised slower ball to Wright who on 99, went for one slog too many and got right underneath a drive, which headed straight for the safe hands of David Sidebottom at long on. Wright's less-than-sporting gesture was to yell "PLEASE DROP IT" - whether it was intended to distract the fielder we don't know, but it certainly didn't help, and the chance was not only dropped, but Sidebottom's finger was split in the process and he could take no further part. There would have been a decent case of appealing against Wright for verbal obstruction, but instead Garvey had the good grace to shake him by the hand on reaching his hundred. Unfortunately there was no such sportsmanship from OMT, when none of the 9 redundant players offered to field in Sidebottom's place, especially considering the circumstances of the injury. You couldn't say that it was a turning point as OMT were already on top, but with the opposing talisman still at the crease and becoming a fielder and a bowler light, there was no turning back for Amersham. Wright (179*) was relentless in a display of power despite being dropped twice more, but with support from Marshall (75*), OMT were able to declare after just 40 overs with a breathtaking 300-0.
Amersham started brightly with in-form youngster Andrew Viney (47) setting the pace. However, a middle-order collapse left Amersham at 140-7, and facing a crushing defeat with still 17 overs to survive. But Paul Weston (87) had other ideas, who shared a splendid back-to-the-wall 8th wicket partnership of 78 with Brad Holt (9*), which provided Amersham with maximum batting points. It was left to Sidebottom, perhaps motivated by the earlier incident, who bravely defended the last two balls despite his injured hand to save the match at 219-9.
* Champagne moment: Paul Weston, a straight drive for four to reach his fifty.
