AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Kidmore End 1st on Sat 05 May 2007 at 1:00pm
AMERSHAM CC Won 5 Wkts
Match report
Amersham, newly sponsored by estate agents Strutt & Parker, entertained Kidmore End on Saturday in a 45 over game. The visitors, newly promoted to division 2b of the Morrants Thames Valley League, were highly motivated and keen to cause an upset against Amersham, who play in division 1. Kidmore End batted first and initially found runs hard to come by as Matt Crawley and Brad Holt maintained good discipline in their bowling. Crawley induced an edge from Tom Sheldon to capture the first wicket, but this marked the beginning of a partnership of 70 between Joe Waldron and Jeff Sheldon, occupying nearly 20 overs. Luke Jackson, Amersham’s captain gave all his bowlers the opportunity to prepare for next week’s first league matches. Chris Owen collected two wickets and Jackson himself one, to add to the three Crawley took. In his first home game, Crawley, from Australia, bowled briskly and exploited some variable bounce in the pitch effectively. Kidmore End’s score of 203 was competitive, but not, perhaps, the daunting total that looked possible when they were well placed at 158-2 with 10 overs to go. Credit for that must go to Jackson who managed his bowling resources cleverly and to the Amersham team who fielded much better than last weekend. Luke Sinclair, batting at 8 for the visitors, was victim of a rare event. Startled to be called for single after fending a short ball to backward point, he could be considered unlucky to be run out by a direct hit from David Atkinson, whose throwing is a source of amusement to his teammates. Amersham’s openers, Chris Fleming and Andy Viney set off briskly in pursuit. Fleming was quick to punish anything short and the two ran between the wickets well. They reached their 100 partnership in the 21st over, the third such partnership Amersham have posted in only 4 games this year. Fleming moved quickly past 50 and received support from Rob Viney and Chris Owen as he pursued his second hundred of the season. Unfortunately he fell 7 runs short of that milestone attempting to increase the rate as some tight bowling threatened to win the game for the visitors. His demise brought Jackson to the wicket and his 19 off 13 balls swung the contest back in favour of the home side. Owen also found his stride and victory was achieved with one over to go. This was good preparation for the serious business of league cricket which begins on Saturday when Amersham entertain Cove at Shardeloes, starting at 1.30pm.
