North Maidenhead 1st v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 16 Jun 2007 at 1:30pm
AMERSHAM CC Won 75 Runs

Match report Amersham visited North Maidenhead on Saturday and came away with a convincing victory. On a day when heavy showers made cricket well nigh impossible in many places in the Thames Valley the men from Shardeloes were undoubtedly lucky to get a full game in. However, they capitalised effectively on this luck to record a victory which brought them up to fourth in the league. Having lost the toss Amersham were asked to bat first and found runs very hard to come by as former Indian test player Paras Mhambrey used his considerable skill to bowl an opening spell of 10 overs for only 10 runs. However Andy Viney (23) and Chris Fleming (16) prolonged the opening partnership for 18 overs, providing a valuable base for later acceleration. This was provided by Matt Crawley (35) and Rob Viney (51) who put on 53 for the 5th wicket. This rescued Amersham from the slightly worrying situation of 62 for 4 and put the home attack under some pressure. Crawley was eventually undone by a fine delivery from Mhambrey, but Viney continued to be harsh on anything short as he reached his 50. In difficult batting conditions, with a short interruption for rain and a slow outfield, this was a fine innings, worth many more than 50 in the context of a low scoring game.

Amersham took the field to defend their total of 182 knowing that a tight bowling performance and good fielding would make it hard for North Maidenhead. This goal was emphatically delivered as all the bowlers performed admirably and some good catches were held. The opening attack consisted of the pace of Matt Crawley and the spin of David Atkinson and this paid immediate dividends as Atkinson had the dangerous David Shaw caught at short mid off in the second over. Crawley followed this by taking wickets in three of his next four overs, making life distinctly difficult for the home batsmen with late movement accounting for Mhambrey and Ahmed, and steepling bounce proving too much for Malpass. When Ashgar edged Atkinson to slip (where Crawley, inevitably, took the catch) North Maidenhead were in desperate trouble at 20-5. Carney and Terrington built a good partnership from there, interspersing watchful defence with strong hitting. Carney, however, tried to hit Matt Ash once too often and found the safe hands of Asa Bridle at long off. From there the excellent Terrington, who deserved to reach his half century, could not find partners to remain with him for long enough to save the game as Carter was bowled by an unplayable delivery from Chris Owen and Crawley finished the innings with two wickets in two balls.

This was a second excellent performance in a week from Amersham and Jackson’s men move on to this Saturday’s game against Tring Park II at Shardeloes with confidence and a determination to continue this good run.
