AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Thame Town on Sat 20 May 2017 at 11:30
AMERSHAM CC Won By 114 runs (D/L Method)

Match report Amersham cruised to the top of Division 2 in the HCPL with a convincing win over Thame Town.

On a rather wet and unpleasant day, Thame Town visted Shardeloes for the 3rd round of fixtures in HCPCL Div2. With the inevitable prospect of Duckworth-Lewis having an effect on the match, the visitors won the toss and promptly informed Viney that Amersham would be having a bat.

After eight overs of the match, this decision had looked like it had backfired slightly with Bruce Friderichs’ (32) latching on to some wayward bowling from Jeffcock. However with Rooney (9-2-24-2) bowling well from the Pavilion End, Amersham were unable to take full control of the match.

Friderichs’ eventually succumbed to an exceptional catch at 2nd slip off of the bowling of Rooney and the tide of the match shifted slightly in Thame’s favour as captain Beard joined Rooney and continued to apply pressure on Bowcock and R Viney. When Bowcock fell, top edging a pull shot off Russel (9-0-35-2) for 25, Amersham were 76 for 2 with just under 30 overs to bat. It was this point when the first rain delay hit the match. After short break, the players were back out with only two overs of the match lost. R Viney (19) holed out trying to install some impetuous to the innings just before the 2nd rain break. A further eight overs had been lost from the match when play resumed. A Viney and Liyanapathiranage (31), decided this was the time to attack and went about raising the run rate for the home side. Liyanapathiranage, trying to clear the hedge, was caught at long on with the score on 147 with 10 overs left to bat.
These 10 overs saw Amersham add 75 runs thanks to a bludgeoning partnership between Jackson (24) and Viney. Viney’s tremendous innings of 64 was finally ended with 1 ball remaining, and Amersham closed on 222-6. Thanks to a little boost from D/L, Thame required 234 to win from their 45 overs.

The newly formed new ball partnership of Helm (9-0-25-2) and Lines again set about testing the footwork and ability of the opposition top order and after 10 overs Thame were on the ropes at 26-2. Rogers followed Lines from the Cornfield End and continued to make things difficult for the Thame top order, sending Beard back to the Pavilion, thanks to a good catch from A Viney. This sparked the beginning of the end for Thame as Rogers and Liyanapathiranage began to turn the screw. Two more wickets in the next two overs and Thame found themselves struggling at 55-5, over 50 runs behind the D/L par score.

It was this stage when Mushtaq made his way to the crease and promptly decided that the game was beyond his reach and decided to have a net. Liyanapathiranage, who was not at his best still proved a handful as he picked up wickets at regular intervals to finish with figures of 9-1-36-4. And when Rogers (7.4-2-22-4) returned to the attack to the match was ended.

This win makes it three from three for Amersham and thanks to some rain elsewhere, sees them sitting at the top of the table.

Hoping to continue their early season form, Amersham face a stern test away at Dachet next week.
