AMERSHAM CC Saturday 3rd X1 v Thatcham Town 2 on Sat 13 May 2017 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 1 wicket
Match report
Amersham 3rd XI recorded their first victory of the season with a thrilling win off the last ball against Thatcham Town 3nd XI at Little Kingshill on Saturday.
After winning the toss and batting first, the visitors posted a respectable 210 all out in 45 overs, leaving the hosts a target of 211 in the remaining 55 overs of the game. Roy Sundiram with 4-23 was the pick of the Amersham bowlers, well supported by young Joe Weston with 1-29 off 10 overs, and Rob Hall who picked up 2 crucial wickets with his leg spin.
After the Amersham openers put on a largely untroubled 57 for the first wicket, Shuvadip Basu ( 34 ) then took the score to 112-2 and a straightforward victory seemed assured. However a flurry of wickets, aided in large measure by some questionable shot selection by the middle order, left the Amersham innings in tatters at 138-7 with 73 runs still required off the 15 overs remaining and victory seemed improbable at best. Vimal Rajasekaran then played the innings of the day, and started to shepherd the tail towards the target and by the start of the 52nd over an improbable win seemed on the cards with the total on 195-8. His dismissal for an excellent 45 runs, going for one shot too many, then brought the final pair of Mark Wormley and Rob Hall together, and it would be fair to say that the advantage then lay with the visitors, but the drama was anything but over.
The final over began with 11 runs still required for the home side, 1 wicket needed for the visitors, and the draw possibly the most likely outcome. All three outcomes were still possible when just 4 runs were scored from the first 4 balls. Rob Hall then showed the value of pre-season batting practice and bludgeoned a boundary with a well-grooved heave to long on off the penultimate delivery to leave nerves jangling and 3 runs required for victory. Attempting a similar swipe off the final ball, the result was a mishit to mid off and a quick single was taken, which somehow became two runs courtesy of an overthrow. Complete pandemonium then followed, with Rob Hall deciding that with the scores level he might as well carry on running and joined Mark Wormley at the bowlers end who then set off. The Thatcham player in possession of the ball then made a crucial error - instead of throwing the ball to the other end, he decided to try and outrun him. Big mistake. End result was the winning run somehow completed to herald scenes of wild jubilation mixed with utter disbelief.
Great credit must also go to the Thatcham team for not contesting what could have become a possibly controversial end to the game, and by so doing allowed the spirit of an excellent game of cricket to be maintained to the very end.
Next week Amersham visit North Maidenhead and will seek to build upon what may turn out to be a quite crucial victory.
