AMERSHAM CC Saturday 3rd X1 v Wooburn Narkovians on Sat 17 Jun 2017 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
A vastly improved performance saw Amersham 3rds lose by the narrowest of margins in a closely fought encounter against Wooburn Narkovians at Little Kingshill on Saturday.
Batting first on a glorious day, Ben Langley and Graeme McPhillips (18) started steadily against a good Wooburn attack and at 104-1 in the 30th over a score of 240 plus looked to be on the cards. This was not to be the case and when Langley was unfortunately run out just 11 short of what would have been an excellent century and then skipper Paul Weston soon followed him to the pavilion after another silly run out it looked likely that the innings would fall short of 200. Joe Weston however continued his impressive run of recent form and ensured maximum batting points were secured and remained unbeaten on 35 when the innings closed on 208-7.
In reply the evergreen Duncan Ward and the slightly more youthful Adam Crossley made early inroads to the Wooburn batting and their three early wickets gave the home side an early advantage. The Wooburn skipper Mark Tennant(63) then joined forces with Cuthbert (46) and together they calmly compiled an excellent 100 partnership for the 4th wicket and looked to be heading towards a comfortable victory. Smart catches by both Westons and late wickets for Ward and Crossley then set up a thrilling finale and with 20 needed with one wicket remaining the outcome was very much in the balance. Unfortunately Wooburn had one trump card remaining in the form of David Bushnell who mixed judicious running with some powerful and clean hitting and the watching alpacas had to run for cover as the first ball of the 44th over was deposited into their field to see the away side to an ultimately deserved 1 wicket victory.
Though it perhaps did not feel like it in the immediate aftermath, there were plenty of positives to take from the game and if performances can continue to improve then mid table security will be very much on the cards.
