Match report This was probably the most disappointing availability performance for the whole season as the majority of the senior Amersham players failed to even respond one way or another to the call for availability for this competition, where the winners would pocket £1000 and we would only have to have won two matches to collect this potentially valuable addition to Club funds. Two senior players, who indicated their availability either pulled out on the day of the match or simply failed to turn up.
The opposition by contrast turned out 8 of their regular Saturday 1st X1.
As we were scrabbling around for players with 1 hour to go, the consequence was that Amersham took to the field with only 9 players with myself driving Dominic Haddock to the ground, who kindly stepped in at the last minute and Philip Doyle who borrowed some kit to play in - my thanks to them both.
With a late start and overcast conditions and 9 players for the first 4-5 overs, we were good enough to restrict the opposition to 174 in their 18 overs(shortened game).
The challenge was on and we took 25 runs from the first two overs of our chase, but Elmo was caught off a low return catch by the bowler and Andy got out to a good yorker.
This must have unsettled a part of the team as some of the middle order went without too many runs being added. There were strong batting performances from James Wood & Rob Viney, but we were scoring rather too slowly and ended up some 50 runs short (or 3 an over).
Considering the firepower we had available, we made a very good fist of the game, but it is a sad indictment of such a Club as ours that so little effort was made by the majority of Senior players either to play or even to communicate.
Unless there is a considerable improvement in the manners of most, I cannot forsee our Club progressing.
