Chesham v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 25 Apr 2009 at 13:30
Match was Drawn
Match report
Amersham got their 2009 season off to a very convincing start at Chesham on Saturday. Although the game was drawn Chesham were 110 runs short of Amersham's total of 255, with two wickets in hand. Amersham were inserted when Dave Porter, Chesham's captain, won the toss and the Viney brothers, Rob and Andy got the innings off to a good start with a partnership of 54. Andy Viney fell at the first bowling change, miscuing Jason Rance to the gully, but Rob Viney moved on to a 50 of his own. A wobble in the middle order reined in the scoring rate, but this was shortlived as Richard Stephenson and Abhay Mayer accelerated very effectively as the innings approached its close. Stephenson fell just short of 50, edging Hitesh Modi to Simon Veys behind the stumps, but Mayer continued aggressively, passing 50 just before the innings closed. Adris Ahmed was the pick of the Chesham bowlers, his late swing earning him 3 wickets. Valuable time was spent in the middle by many of Amersham's batsmen, and this is an important part of any pre-season game. This theme continued after tea as Amersham used 9 bowlers. Chris Cann bowled quickly with the new ball, and picked up the important wicket of Rob Maier. Stuart Rogers swung the ball and was rewarded with the wicket of Jason Rance in his second spell, while Andy Viney bowled briskly down the hill. The most successful bowler was Monty Khandelwal (4-35), whose nagging seamers induced mistakes by the Chesham batsmen, many of whom were dismissed playing expansive shots. When David Atkinson picked up the 8th wicket with the score still below 90, victory seemed to be a formality, but the 9th wicket Chesham partnership of Tom Crick and Simon Veys played with a good deal of common sense, interspersing watchful defence with occasional strokeplay. They negotiated the final part of the game with few alarms and demonstrated what is possible with a little application.
