AMERSHAM CC Sunday 1st X1 v Farnham Royal on Sun 26 Jul 2009 at 14:00
AMERSHAM CC Won 164 Runs
Match report
The opposition upon arriving at the ground described themselves flatteringly as 'weak', so the team invented a new form of roulette - the batting order not only being drawn out of a hat, but the first shot played being pre-designated.
The two Chris's got the Amersham innings off to a fine start, with 'Duck' Cowley making a 50 and 'Drop Kick' Owen plundering 125. At the fall of the first wicket Hugh 'Defence' Jackson strode to the crease, but fell to the only catch that long leg held onto for the day - a mirror image of a shot played an over or so earlier that was hopelessly grassed. Jack 'Cover drive' Rogers perished to one of the only straight balls of the day and James 'Paddle sweep' Dolleymore added quickly to the exercise regime that Amersham had worked out for Farnham Royal.
Stuart 'Sweep' Rogers plundered runs in typically aggresive fashion, but was another who succumbed to the surprise straight one.
Huw 'Reverse sweep' Thomas ticked over to an unbeaten 13 and Elliot 'Charge' Ketteringham had one ball to demonstrate a rather late charge. Unfortunately, Alex 'Leave' Lines, Andrew 'Late Cut' Viney & Harry '9 Iron' Heslop did not get the chance to show us their range of shots.
Tea taken, the Farnham Royal innings was unremarkable, but for 3 noteworthy incidents.
One of their batsmen, hit in the chest by Stuart Rogers appeared to invent a new law of the game, by turning around and striking the stationery ball from just outside his crease towards the boundary, citing that if hit above waist height, it was the batsmans right so to do - Law 34 follows: 1. Out Hit the ball twice
(a) The striker is out Hit the ball twice if, while the ball is in play, it strikes any part of his person or is struck by his bat and, before the ball has been touched by a fielder, he wilfully strikes it again with his bat or person, other than a hand not holding the bat, except for the sole purpose of guarding his wicket.
Their number 11 - probably about the same age as batting position was probably the smallest individual ever to have played in a senior league match at Shardeloes - from the boundary, he appeared to be exactly half the height of Alex 'Leave' Lines.
It started raining again heavily just after end of play.
So that was it - Amersham win the Sunday League with 3 games left to play - as it was once put, the world ends not with a bang, but with a whimper.
It was a shame that we did not face a sterner test to go out on a high, however, thoughts now turn to next season, with perhaps a bigger challenge elsewhere.
All that now remains is probably personal Sunday milestones to achieve.
