Match report Amersham began their league season in disappointing fashoin against Harefield on Saturday. As happened last year former Zimbabwean test bowler Mluleki Nkala (5-50) proved the difference between the two sides as his opening spell accounted for Chris Fleming and Chris Cann whilst conceding only 16 runs from 13 overs. This put pressure on the Amersham batting line up for the rest of the innings and Only Luke Jackson was able to dominate the visitors' bowling. His 60 included some fine stroke play, mixing the orthodox with the imaginative. He received support from Andy Viney, whose 29 was particularly dogged as he delt with the threat of Nkala, brother Hugh and Richard Stephenson before something of a collapse meant that Amersham were unable to reach the bonus point landmark of 175.
To defend this total successfully required a particularly tight start in the field, and this was not forthcoming. Both bowling and fielding were slightly down on the high standards expected and required and Harefield were able to get a very quick start. This meant they had time on their side later in the innings. Good bowlign from Andy Viney (1-23), Abhay Mayer (1-20) and David Atkinson (1-23) meant that some pressure was put on the Harefield middle order, but the free flowing strokeplay of Jack Shiel (37*) supported Richard McLeod (64*) as they saw their side to victory.
