Maidenhead & Bray v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 16 May 2009 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 7 wickets

Match report Amersham recorded their first victory of the league season when they visited newly promoted Maidenhead and Bray and came away with a comfortable 7 wicket victory. This was founded on a good all round performance in which both bowling, fielding and batting were better than last week's game against Harefield, although the questions posed by the opposition were, perhaps, easier to deal with.

Having lost the toss Amersham were slightly surprised to be asked to bowl first, but went about their task with no little skill. Alex Lines and Chris Cann bowled very well indeed in their first spells and after 15 overs Maidenhead were 25-3. Cann removed Kennedy's off stump in the 4th over, and Lines recorded his first league wickets with successive balls in the 13th over. Tysoe was caught at second slip and Khan was palpably LBW to the first ball he received. This put Maidenhead on the back foot, a position they found hard to escape from as all 6 Amersham bowlers bowled well. Chris Owen's knack of dismissing batsmen who appear well set accounted for Bashir, well caught by Abhay Mayer at slip.

Charlie Roger batted well for Maidenhead, mixing watchful defence with aggression where appropriate. Removing him seemed key, since he couldhave scored quickly towards the end of the game. He was run out by a first rate piece of fielding by Alex Lines, who fired a return from the extra cover boundary with pin point accuracy into Rob Viney's gloves.

Abhay Mayer and David Atkinson bowled tightly throughout, conceding 3 an over from the 18 they shared, and picking up a wicket each. Amersham would have settled for conceding a total of 160 before the game, and so settled to tea well pleased, with the exception of your correspondent, who was faced with the very real possibility of Newcastle United's relegation on account of their failure to get so much as a point from Fulham.

He got over his shock & disappointment in time to watch his batsmen colleagues deal very efficiently with the task of scoring 161 to win. Chris Fleming played some distinctively characteristic shots before falling LBW for 15. The key part of the game was the partnership of 107 between Andy Viney (61) and Chris Cann (65*) which brought Amersham within 12 of victory. Both batsmen played with positive intent throughout and the Maidenhead bowling attack could not match them, although there were a few edgy moments along the way. Viney fell with victory in sight and it was left to Luke Jackson to accompany Cann across the line.

All in all this was a very encouraging performance, led by Cann whose bowling and batting were first rate.
