AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Fleet on Sat 23 May 2009 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 8 wickets

Match report Amersham recorded a convincing 8 wicket victory against Fleet on Saturday. The visitors struggled with their pre-match navigation and arrived disjointedly having encountered a succession of problems on Britain's motorway network. Their stormy mood was not helped by the early inroads into their batting inflicted by Chris Cann. Following on from his fine bowling at Maidenhead and Bray the previous week he bounced Parker out in the second over, recording the notable treble of breaking the batsman's bat, hitting him a glancing blow on the helmet and having him caught behind off the same ball. This was the first of 4 dismissals for Rob Viney behind the stumps, who had a fine afternoon with gloves and, later, the bat. Cann also dismissed Reeve with a fine delivery that pitched outside off stump and cut back to hit middle. Fleet's most dangerous batsman is opener Russell Black, but he was sunk by a superb slip cathc by Chris Owen off Andy Viney. Andy Viney's bowling has been a revelation this year, and he is rapidly developing into a very useful bowler. This afternoon against Fleet was indication of this as he bowled with good pace and reliability. He ran through the Fleet middle order, reducing them almost single hadndedly from 58-3 to 86-7, including an excellent reflex return catch. David Atkinson (1-16) and Alex Lines (1-31) chipped in to keep the pressure on Fleet. A partnership between Talbot and Newman kept the Hampshire men afloat but the dismissal of Newman triggered a flurry of three wickets in one Viney over which ended the Fleet innings on 125.

The early dismissals of Chris Fleming (12) and Andy Viney (1) gave the visitors some hope, but this was quickly extinguished by a partnership that was never broken between Rob Viney and Chris Cann. Both batted well, punishing the bad balls and defending watchfully against the good ones. Viney's 69* was the more aggressive innings, while Cann read the situation perfectly and cruised to an unbeaten 41.

This was the second convincing win in a week for Amersham, and leaves them 2nd in the league at this early stage. Next week they travel to North Maidenhead aiming to extend this early season form against a side that have yet to record a win.
