Tring Park 2 v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 13 Jun 2009 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 4 wickets
Match report
CANN-Y SPIN PROVES SUCCESSFUL AT TRING
Amersham continued their winning run on Saturday at Tring Park. After last week's abandonment against Thatcham a warm and largely sunny day greeted an unchanged team. Luke Jackson won the toss and offered Tring first use of a used pitch that looked as if it would not favour the quicker bowler. Over the course of the match this proved to be the case, but initial signs suggested otherwise as Alex Lines bowled an excellent opening spell. He did not concede a run until his 6th over as he maintained first rate discpline. Runs did flow from the other end however, as Simon Shearman punished anything short. Spin was introduced early in the innings, as Abhay Mayer & David Atkinson bowled the 14th & 15th overs. This immediately paid dividends as 3 wickets fell in quick succession as Tring fell from 55 for no wicket to 62 for 3 in 4 overs. Both spinners claimed an LBW victim, and Mayer turned a beautiful off break through Mark Bater's defensive push. This burst of activity turned the game Amersham's way and, although Tring battled hard throughout, the Buckinghamshire side never surrendered the initiative.
Atkinson & Mayer bowled 37 overs unchanged between them, conceding runs at an average of only 3.2 per over. This pressure paid off as 2 more wickets fell with the score under 100, both to attempted boundary shots; Mayer bowled Shearman as the batsman charged forwards playing, but missing a booming straight drive, and Hugh Jackson held a good catch as Sullivan attempted to hit Atkinson for 6 over deep midwicket. For the remainder of the innings the two sides skirmished-short partnerships held promise for Tring, only to be ended by another wicket for one of the spinners. Mayer recorded his first 5 wicket haul for the club when Chris Owen held captain Ben Kempster in the deep. Dan Plueridge wielded the long handle to good effect in the last few overs, hitting 3 sixes in his 27. However, the extra pace of the returning Alex Lines was much harder to hit out of the ground and Lines bowled him to record a richly deserved victim-reward for his excellent opening spell.
The Amersham run chase began promisingly with 15 off the first 3 overs. However, Tring fought back. Kempster changed the bowling frequently in the first 10 overs trying to find the most effective combinations. Dan Plumeridge dismissed the Viney brothers, but a partnership of 48 between Chris Feming (27) and Chris Cann (84*), scored at 8 an over, put Amersham in a strong position because there was subsequently much less pressure to score quickly. Chris Cann played arguably his best innings for the club. His unbeaten 84 was nearly chanceless and his skill neutralised the demons in the pitch. He was quick to punish anything wayward in length, driving particularly well. He received good support from Luke Jackson (19) in a partnership of 47 and Richard Stephenson (22) hurried Amersham towards the winning line with a flurry of boundaries. Chris Owen hit the winning runs with 10 overs to spare as Amersham consolidated their position as one of the top clubs in the division.
A convincing victory for Harefield has moved them to the top of the league, but only one point ahead of Amersham. Next week High Wycombe 2nd XI visit Shardeloes as Amersham begin a run of 4 games against strong teams which may well define their season.
