Match report
SPITTY POLISHES OFF WYCOMBE
Amersham recorded a comfortable victory against High Wycombe 2nd XI on Saturday. Skipper Luke Jackson won the toss again, and it was no surprise that he chose to bowl first. Alex Lines and Chris Cann got the game off to an exciting start-within the first 8 balls a catch had been missed, a good catch held at 2nd slip and middle stump rocked back. In more detail, Chris Owen held a low catch at 2nd slip to dismiss Robbie Jones for 2-a key wicket-and Chris Cann beat Russell Curzon Thompson's forward push to bowl him and break a bail. Cann followed this up by finding the outside edge of Zaib's bat, leaving Wycombe in some trouble at 15-3. Keith Stone dug in for Wycombe, batting for 1h 40m for his 22, while S Hussain and Lee Hardy played a few attractive shots in their knocks of 21 & 23 respectively. Hussain, however, chipped a return catch to Andy Viney to end his innings, while Hardy and, eventually, Stone fell to Amersham's pair of spinners who again controlled the second part of the opposition innings.
David Atkinson (4-26) & Abhay Mayer (2-13) bowled in tandem for 22 overs and Wycombe had no answer to their accurate & miserly spin. Atkinson struck first as Hardy perhaps frustrated after becoming bogged down, lofted a catch to Richard Stephenson on the long on boundary. Shortly after Stone played on to Mayer, leaving the visitors on 90-6. This perilous position soon deteriorated further as the last 4 wickets fell for 6 runs courtesy of the spinners. Mayer induced a skier from Robinson (19), while Atkinson removed the tail, all of whom failed to trouble the scorers.
111 was not a daunting target, and an excellent innings from Chris Fleming made sure of victory for Amersham. His unbeaten 60 was punctuated with typical drives and he received good support from Rob Viney (29).
As I conclude this report in the bar after the match we can reflect on a good win and some confidence that all the admin, including the match report, hae been completed before the other games in the league will have reached their conclusion!
Champagne moment: Chris Owen's catch in the first over.
Man of the match: I asked the captain and found him in indecisive mood, perhaps because he was surrounded by the possible candidates. He therefore offers a choice of 4: Atkinson, Lines, Fleming & Mayer. You'll have to make your own mind up.
