AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Chesham on Sat 27 Jun 2009 at 13:30
Match was Drawn

Match report Amersham had much the best of a draw with Chesham at Shardeloes on Saturday. Having accumulated an imposing 273-3 off 52 overs the early dismissal for 1 of Bradman Ediweera probably menat Chesham had no chance of victory. However the determined & skilful Rob Maier prevented Amersham forcing a victory.

Earler the game got off to a careful start asn tight bowling from Adris Ahmed, Tom Helm, and Bradman Ediweera prevented the rapid accumulation of runs. Drinks were taken at 88-2, a reasonable position, but not one of great strength. Chris Fleming was batting reasonably solidly, although he had taken advantage of a couple of dropped catches by the visitors, as was Chric Cann. They accelerated into the second half of the innings and Cann's demise for a skilfully constructed 64 proved to be something of a turning point. Captain Luke Jackson came in with only 12 overs remaining and the score on 154. 45 minutes later he was 73 not out, and Amersham had posted a daunting 273. His innings included 6 sixes, including 4 in one over off Martin Wheeler and 6 fours. It lasted only 36 balls and was a joy to behold. In many other games an unbeaten 112 would take the limelight, so Chris Fleming can feel a little hard done by that his excellent innings was put somewhat in the shade.

Bradman Ediriweera has a long and varied career as a cricketer, including performances for Sri Lanka A, and he is one of the most valued wickets in the Thames Valley League. Dismissing him in the second over miscuing Chris Cann into the safe hands of Andy Viney at midwicket encouraged Amersham to think of victory in this game. Howevre, Rob Maier, another long term and respected foe, had other ideas, and his 70 meant that Chesham were always blessed with a resilient presence at the crease. His dismissal with the score on 113 gave Amersham renewed hope, as did the removal 4 runs later of Peter Clifford. However, a break of 45 minutes to allow a slow moving thunderstorm to move out of range removed much of the momentum from Amersham and Chesham were not greatly troubled during the 12 overs remaining.

This result leaves Amersham joint top of the league. 3 clubs share top spot on 127 points. Harefield beat Tring Park, and Thatcham overcame Maidenhead & Bray to share the lead, while Kew sit 5 points behind. The league is showing signs of becoming a 4 club race as the 5th placed club, North Maidenhead are 26 points adrift.
