Harefield v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 11 Jul 2009 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 2 wickets

Match report Amersham's long unbeaten run in the Thames Valley League ended on Saturday as they were defeated by 2 wickets at Harefield in a top of the table encounter. An uncompromising and hard fought game was finally decided in the final over, which began with all four results very possible. The overall standard of the cricket, in worsening conditions, was a credit to both sides.

Having lost the toss Amersham were asked to bat first and lost a wicket on the second over. Rob and Andy Viney dug in to counter some hostile seam bowling from Doug King (5-38) and Tom Crick (2-44), but were both dismissed, along with Hugh Jackson, before 50 was posted. This brought Luke Jackson (48) and Abhay Mayer (36) together in a partnership of 72, comfortably the largest of the game. Both men palyed with gritty determination and no little skill and propelled Amersham towards a defendable total. However, there was no let up in the quality of the Harfield bowling and Amersham were unable to dominate, even with two batsmen well set. Jackson was seventh out with the score on 154 and the tail was unable to add much to this total, meaning that Harefield were set 158 to win. Crucially, given that the game ended in the last over, Amersham were dismissed in 49.3 overs, leaving their hosts 50 overs to bat.

The ball continued to dominate the bat when Amersham bowled. Alex Lines (2-17) was typically miserly, restricting the Harefield openers to only 4 runs off his first 7 overs, including the dismissal of Jack Shiel for a duck, while Tom Dixon (5-48) enjoyed his opportunity to open the bowling by claiming 3 wickets in a nine over spell. He was particularly well supported by Rob Viney behind the stumps who stood up to the wicket to Dixon throughout and claimed two extremely sharp catches. At 58-5 Harefield were wobbling, but their captain, Akshay Reddy, played the game's decisive innings. His unbeaten 75 was chanceless and he timed his acceleration to perfection. The game tilted back in Amersham's favour when two wickets fell with the score on 107, again to Tom Dixon, However, Reddy was still there and he received good support from Lench, whose 16 not out frustrated Amersham at the end of the innings. As the innings went on the drizzle intensified, making bowling and fielding trickier, and, perhaps, reduced the potency of the Amersham attack as the ball became difficult to grip, see and pick up in the damp and gloom.

Next week Maidenhead and Bray visit Shardeloes and Amersham will hope to return to winning ways at the first time of asking.

Man of the match: Tom Dixon, with honourable mentions to Luke Jackson for his 48 and Rob Viney for his 4 catches.
