AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Maidenhead & Bray on Sat 18 Jul 2009 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Amersham bounced straight back to winning ways on Saturday as they defeated Maidenhead and Bray by 6 wickets at Shardeloes.
Choosing to bowl first, Amersham looked for an immediate breakthrough through Alex Lines and Tom Dixon. They had to wait until the score was on 30 for it however, when Tysoe, who had 25 of the 30, chipped Dixon (2-33) to the safe hands of Stephenson at mid on. His opening partner, Bashir soon followed. His dismissal was rather unusual; Wicketkeeper Rob Viney was stood up to the stumps, Bashir left a delivery from Dixon, held the pose for a fraction of a second too long and Viney whipped the bails off while his back heel was raised. Andy Viney (1-18) accounted for the next wicket when the score had advanced to 65, inducing an edge from Arjan, which was caught by his brother behind the stumps, for a pleasant 11.
There then began the longest partnership of the Maidenhead innings, between the wristy Kumar and the resolute Bezuidenhout. They put on 46, bringing the score to 111, but became increasingly frustrated by the Amersham spinners whose control meant there were very few scoring opportunities as the overs ticked by. Gradually the batsmen took more risks until Bezuidenhout holed out. Abhay Mayer's (2-23) offspin has added to Amersham's attack this season and Andy Viney took a good catch moving backwards at mid off to give him the wicket. This allowed David Atkinson (3-25) to bowl the first ball to a new batsman, Brooks, and he immediately trapped him LBW with no further addition to the score. 111-5 became 112-8 two overs later as Atkinson persuaded Kumar to chip the ball to the waiting Dixon at midwicket, and bowled Hewitt first ball. Mayer claimed his second wicket through a second sharp stumping from Rob Viney and suddenly Amersham were completely in control of the game.
A sharp runout courtesy of Luke Jackson accounted for his opposite number as captain, James Coyne, and Alex Lines (1-22) was recalled to finish the innings, which he did almost immediately.
When chasing a small target a good start is very important and Elliot Ketteringham and Andy Viney provided exactly that. Their partnership of 65 brough Amersham more than half way to their target and, despite the loss of 4 wickets along the way, victory was accomplished comfortably. Ketteringham (48) was particularly keen to despatch anything short, and his innings included 10 boundaries. Andy Viney (19) was watchful and assured in defence while Richard Stephenson (39*) was quick to punish anything off line or length to see Amersham over the line.
This was a good win, especially after last week's defeat, and showed the resilience of the side, especially in the field. To take 7 wickets for the cost of only 14 runs is a fine performance, and was the crucial part of the game.
Next week Amersham make the long journey to Fleet in Hampshire with every intention of continuing this excellent season.
