Thatcham Town v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 08 Aug 2009 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Lost 7 Wickets
Match report
A dismal display by the Amersham top order saw the Hatchets come second in a hardfought top of the table encounter at Thatcham.
A week of poor weather in the Berkshire town saw a usually hard, fast wicket adopt a spongy demeanour, and it was with some disappointment that captain Jackson lost the toss for the fourth time in succession. Unfortunately, Thatcham's equivalent was too savvy to bat first (contrary to the previous 3 weeks), and Fleming and Colquhoun strode to the wicket with a view to building a strong foundation. Unfortunately, Fleming was out to the fourth ball of the innings, caught at second slip, and Colquhoun followed shortly thereafter with a clip to midwicket. Andy Viney's stern defence was soon beaten by a clever leg cutter, and Jackson's loose drive saw Amersham in deep peril at 5 for 4. The situation soon worsened, as Rob Viney and Abhay Mayer were both dismissed by the time the score had reached 24.
Much has been said of the strength of Amersham's middle order, and the fall of the sixth wicket brought Owen and Stephenson, two of Amersham's most experienced campaigners, come together. Together they blended watchful defence with smart strokeplay and ferocious running between the wickets to somewhat recover the situation, before Stephenson was unlucky to pick out midwicket with the score still well under 100. Enter the running puppy, Tom Dixon, who displayed calmness at the crease at odds with his off field character to support Owen to an excellent 50, and to shepherd the team to a score of 140 when they were bowled out in the 49th over.
While not a formidable total, 140 is something to bowl at, and the Amersham team entered the field with positive thoughts. Lines and Dixon were on the money straight away, and Dixon soon picked up a Test scalp when Naqvi chipped to the typically diving Fleming at square leg. Amersham never let the pressure off, and Thatcham crept along towards the target, letting it rise to nearly 4 an over. However, the fact that they were abloe to keep wickets in hand meant they were always in control, and the batsmen were able to accelerate confidently when required. Despite a proud bowling the fielding performance, and wickets for Jackson and Lines, Thatcham reached Amersham's total with 3 overs to spare.
