AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Tring Park 2 on Sat 15 Aug 2009 at 12:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 48 runs
Match report
The excellence of Tom Dixon and Alex Lines with the ball saw Amersham eventually record a comfortable victory at Shardeloes, despite another abysmal top order batting performance.
As usual, the skipper lost the toss and the home side were inserted, and were quickly on the back foot as a seaming wicket saw the top 3 all bowled, worringly, in quick succession. Jackson and Stephenson soon followed, leaving Amersham at 5 for 22 - better than the previous week against Thatcham, but not by much. Andy Viney, spared the new ball battle for a change, joined the returning Chris Cann, and Amersham's strength in depth came to the fore as 96 were added in good time through some classy batting from both players. The returning Chaplin first tied down an ebullient Cann, and then bowled him comprehensively with the score on 118 to turn the match back in Tring Park's favour. The next four wickets fell with barely a whimper, and Amersham were finally dismissed for 127, as both Kempster and Chapling returned 5 wicket hauls.
The shortened first innings meant Tring Park had to negotiate 55 minutes before tea. Lines was straight into a good rhythm and bowled with considerable pace and accuracy, removing Chaplin immediately and keeping Tring Park's star batsman Paul Atkins quiet. Dixon then removed numbers 3 and 4 - including a beautiful leg cutter which accounted for Bushl - when the score had reached 12. Two further wickets in two balls for Lines saw the visitors in real trouble, though Kempster and Atkins saw Tring through to tea with the score at 47. Th early overs after tea were always going to be critical, and Dixon's removal of Kempster and Mitchell in successive balls turned the tide strongly in Amersham's favour. The counter attacking Cox provided a few worrying moments, but when Dixon had him caught behind taking one risk too many, and Atkins failed to dominate, it was matter of time before Amersham won the match, which they did with the score at 79.
Amersham started the season with a team based around a strong batting line up. Surprisingly it has been Amersham's excellence in the field which has proved the foundation of a successful season to date. The skipper will be looking for the batsman to contribute much more to a strong finish to the season.
