Slough 3 v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 09 May 2009 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 168 Runs
Match report
Amersham II's got their league season off to a flying start with an emphatic 168 run demolition of Slough III's. After losing the toss Amersham were inserted on a good wicket which allowed both Ketteringham (123) & Cowley (91*) to put together what must surely be a second team record partnership of 211 for the first wicket. Both batted sensibly with a mixture of controlled aggression and sensible running against a defensive field and poor Slough ground fielding. The rest of us could only sit back and admire the fit young ladies playing hockey for Slough & Reading on the astroturf pitch behind us! Poor Dan Colquhoun had to wait over two and a half hours for his chance, he didn't disappoint with a quickfire 25*, which included a huge six which nearly landed on the aforementioned hockey pitch. With the run rate at six an over and the luxury of having six frontline bowlers, the captain duly declared the innings on 260-1, leaving Slough 55 overs to get the runs.
Amersham took the field in good heart and attacked from the start, choosing to take the old ball in an opening attack of Hamilton-Pike & Rajabali (2-52). Hamilton-Pike (3-18) initially bowled some real dross down the leg-side, which Elliot did not find too amusing, but as usual Evan saved his worst ball to claim the first breakthrough, a half tracker which induced a mistimed pull into the safe hands of Dan Colquhoun. This obviously inspired Evan who then proceeded to take a further two wickets and two good catches. Mushty then chipped in with two wickets to leave Slough reeling at 45-6. After losing the old ball down a rabbit hole, the captain was forced to take the new ball and introduced both Monty (2-28) & Ward (3-17) into the attack. Apart from some late resistance from Jonathan Gumbs (51), Ward & Khandelwal proceeded to mop up the tail with some fine seam bowling, leaving Slough all out for 92 after 31 overs.
Having eight DNB's didn't give the rest of the team a chance to bat, but this was a fine start to league season, although the I am sure there will be sterner tests to come.
Nick Piper.
