AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 v Hampton Hill on Sat 16 May 2009 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Lost By 3 wickets

Match report As the skipper walked out to bat at 22-4 he wondered whether the decision to bat first was a sensible one - five hours later his decision was almost justified........but not quite! A battling performance on Saturday saw Amersham II's fall just three wickets short of a second successive victory, at home to Hampton Hill.
Losing last weeks centurion, Ketteringham, to the first ball of the game (emulating his great hero, Chris Fleming) followed soon after by Weston, Cowley and Dolleymore (emulating his great hero, Elliott Ketteringham) meant Ash (15) and Piper (9 in 19 overs) had to put the brakes on the tight, miserly and hostile Hampton Hill bowling - Hampton (2-13 from 10) and Dolman (3-29 from 13) starring for the visitors.
A watchful partnership of 35 in 15 overs was ended by a slow run Ash single that needed to be just that bit quicker! Emsley, Dixon and "Limpet Piper" were removed by a mixture of good fielding, poor shot selection and bad luck in the next few overs.................but them came Ward and Monty.
The justified chirping from Hampton Hill slowly began to diminish as the ACC lower middle order exploited an attacking field with shots ranging from the traditional to the modern. The run rate increased markedly as the arms were freed and the score moved into three figures and beyond with Ward particuarly strong straight down the ground.
From 86-8, numbers 8 and 10 moved the score above 130 and sensible nurdling from Rajabali meant not only could Ward get his 50 but Amersham could get an extra batting point and post a respectable 153 all out.
With 50 overs to bowl the opposition out, Amersham needed a tight start to build pressure - two wickets in the first two overs also appeared to work! This, however, brought together Hampton (35) and Ilyas (45) who gave Monty and Ward a bit of their own medicine. Strong shots all around the ground started to take the game away from the home side. Inspiration was needed, and who else would you turn to but Dixon - if we see a better catch this season it will have to be a good one! With the dangerous Hampton gone, Ash (2-34) and Rajabali (2-31) were able to spin their webs and build more pressure on the Hampton middle order.
At 117-6 Amersham had a real chance of victory but a dropped caught and bowled (Ash!) and a couple of tight umpiring decisions meant sensible batting saw Hampton home with 6.3 overs to spare.
Great heart should be taken from this display and it is unlikely a more motivated bowling and fielding perfomance will be seen from the opposition this season. Next up Wooburn Narks - lets hope they win the toss!!!
