Wooburn Narkovians v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 23 May 2009 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won By 5 Wickets
Match report
A fine spell of controlled swing bowling by Tom Dixon set Amersham up for a deserved victory over Wooburn Narkovians on Saturday.
Having thought long and hard over his decision last week, the skipper decided (on winning his third toss out of three) to follow his teams wishes and bowl first on a dappled and softish Wooburn wicket.
Duncan Ward and Tom Dixon bowled a very controlled line, pitched the ball up, and allowed the humidity to work its magic on the gleaming Dukes. Both bowlers were unlucky throughout their spells with edges falling just short, or between, an ever advancing slip cordon. After 18 overs Wooburn had struggled to 45 with the loss of both openeers - one apiece to the bowlers.
The introduction of Khandelwal offered little respite and a couple of wickets added to the woes of the Wooburn top order with only Pidgeon (36) offering any shots of intent.
The evergreen Rajabali again mixed his flight and delivery and accounted for a further couple of wickets - including a stumping for the improving Ketteringham.
The brothers Tennant (38 and 23*) batting low in the order, dragged the Wooburn total past 100 and onwards offering strong shots in front of the wicket; a marked difference to the rest of their teammates
It wasn't until the re-introduction of Dixon that the breakthrough came and a total in excess of 150 was thwarted. A wicket for Ash, two more for Dixon and a wonderfully executed run out - basically sneaking the bails off whilst the batsman was reacting to a turned down LBW appeal - by Ward ended the Wooburn innings at 138
As expected the Amersham innings began at a pace with Ketteringham mixing shots straight down the ground with flicks through mid-wicket. His good form with the bat continued and his winter in Australia has obviously paid off, however a tendency to hit in the air through the on side always kept the oppositino interested.
The dangerous MA Tennant bowled with pace and guile and accounted for Cowley early on bringing Colquhoun to the wicket. Still smarting from a relatively simple dropped catch, the new batsman set about catching his batting partner with his trademark on and off drives. A wonderful partnership of 90 in only 15 overs was ended with one smash too many by Colquhoun - his 37 including 8 4's.
A long wait and an attacking field did not deter Weston as he strode to the crease and a quick fire 25 ended with a quite marvellous catch on the boundary edge - catch, throw up in the air whilst crossing the boundary line, return to the field of play, and complete the catch.
This attempt to out-do Dixon (see last week) started a mini-collapse with Ketteringham (61) and Hamilton-Pike (5) both falling to the spin of Clarke & MS Tennant. However the experiece of Palmer and Ash saw Amersham home with plenty of overs and 5 wickets to spare.
A good all-round performance - controlled bowling, tiggerish fielding, and sensible batting - meant Amersham II's moved up to third in the table and welcome OMT's to Shardeloes next weekend.
