AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 v Old Merchant Taylors on Sat 30 May 2009 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won By 4 Wickets
Match report
Challoners blitz (Old) Merchant Taylors at Shardeloes.
A comfortable win on Saturday took Amersham to joint top of the league and left OMT's still searching for their first win of the season.
Deciding to field first on a glorious early summers afternoon the ACC captain put faith in his bowlers and Rogers (4-38), starting his first game in the 2's this season, repaid it in full
A hostile and intelligent spell of increasingly fast bowling, immediately put OMT's on the back foot. Backed up by the evergreen Ward at the other end, secure slip catching (TFC Collison) and good ground fielding by all meant OMT's were soon struggling - 50-2 at the first drinks break.
Unfortunately for Amersham the bowling age restrictions (on Ward as well as Rogers) meant changes were needed and Hamilton-Pike (1-30), Ash (0-12) and Rajabali (1-45) were unable to keep the pressure on. 107 runs were added in the 17 overs between drinks breaks with only 3 wickets taken, Emsley removing the strong hitting Shelley for 50.
The spinners were particularly targetted and as the innings moved into its final third, OMT's were able to dream of a total close to 250.
However, a threatening stand of 58 between the watchful Winkle and bludgeoning Boardley was ended by the returning Rogers and followed by a further wicket in his next over. Emsley (3-21), under-used thus far this season, continued to bowl a tight line and did enough with the ball to create uncertainty in the lower order and deservedly picked up two further wickets.
Ward, powered by his solar panel, finally picked up the wicket he deserved and a worrying large total was restricted to 215.
The question on the not insubstantial number of spectators lips was obviously how would Amersham respond?
As we always do - the first 50 coming up after only 8.3 overs!
Modi (4-60) opened the innings for the visitors and showed good pace and control throughout his two spells. He was by far and away the pick of the bowlers and suprised both openers (as well as others later) with the pace of his short ball - both fell to top edge pulls that were on them quicker than expected.
Enter Colquhoun - the second Challoners hero.
He is one of those rare English cricketers, able to switch between different forms of the game with consummate ease. Although there was the odd 20/20 thump mixed in, all runs were accrued with crisply hit, well timed shots. As ever, he was strong down the ground but also dismissive of anything short.
He dominated partnerships with Weston (20) and Palmer (26) and took a particular liking to Boardley (1-63) and Shelley (0-36)
His innings of 102 was ended with the return of Modi but by then OMT's had all but given up with a couple of boundary fielders taking the opportunity to have a cheeky ciggie between balls!
Another late wobble with the winning post in sight meant the old heads of Ash and Ward had to see them over the line
Overall a real confidence booster ahead of sterner tests - British Airways next weekend. Chocks away!
